Debate on FDI in Retail in Rajya Sabha - Thursday Dec 6,2012

Debate on FDI in Multi-Brand Retail in Rajya Sabha- Thursday Dec 6,2012
AIADMK's V Maitreyan moves motion on FDI in Rajya Sabha. The motion would be debated under rules 167-168, which entail voting after an "in principle" decision taken at a meeting of Rajya Sabha chairman and leaders of political parties.

BJP's Arun Jaitley, called the UPA a lame duck government saying, "You are a lame duck government. You need a strong support now." "When the government is not able to touch the 272 figure in the Lok Sabha, then a lot is questionable. To reach this number one has to take assistance from many and reach to some understandings. This is a worrying situation''

"If India implements FDI in retail, India will become a country of sales boys, the manufacturing sector will collapse, all the stores will be of international firms. We will be consumers of international products''

 BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad said

"Why this metamorphosis in the BSP in one day? They boycotted FDI in retail during the debate in the Lok Sabha but have declared open support to it. BSP must explain what was the compulsion that led to the change''
while  condemning the language used by BSP's Mayawati during her speech in Rajya Sabha on the FDI issue

CPI leader D Raja claimed that there was no consensus within the UPA on FDI in retail. Ahead of the Rajya Sabha voting on FDI, Raja questioned the stands of SP, BSP and DMK on FDI. "SP and DMK have expressed strong reservations against FDI. There is no consensus. SP, BSP and DMK will have to justify their stands and explain to the people. The point is that the BSP expressed a number of reservations on FDI, so also the SP''

Samajwadi Party's Naresh Agrawal said-
Terming FDI in Retail as a "black law" that would "kill the farmers" and destroy the livelihood of small traders, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday asked the government to "think over the issue again". "The FDI will kill the farmers and destroy the livelihood of small traders. This is a black law (kaala kanoon) and should not be passed. The government must rethink this proposal

AIADMK leader V Maitreyan said
The Congress-led UPA government is lying that FDI in retail will help farmers, small manufacturers and create more jobs.Calling the government's rationale behind FDI as "damned lies at the worst", Mr Maitreyan urged all political parties to defeat the "minority government in the house"
"The government can muster the numbers but I appeal to all political parties to vote ... and save the country. What is poison for Tamil Nadu can't be nectar for Andhra Pradesh''

Shiv Sena also attacked the government and termed the move to bring FDI in retail as a bid to sell of the country. Citing Bofors, 2G spectrum and coal scams, the Shiv Sena leader said, "Till now the government has looted the country, but now it wants to sell it off."

BSP's Mayawati on Thursday Dec 6,2012 declared that she will vote for the government on FDI in retail in the Rajya Sabha.
"The government's proposal on FDI has some loopholes but the plus point for the current FDI policy of Central government is that states won't be forced to implement it''
Mayawati on Thursday turned the debate on FDI in the Rajya Sabha into an attack on the BJP.
Mayawati hit out at BJP and alleged that the party used CBI against her in the Taj Corridor case. "CBI's misuse by UPA Govt. has often been alleged. I would show how BJP misused CBI''

Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said they will walkout from the Rajya Sabha during the vote on FDI

After Mayawati's support to the UPA, there is also a possibility that the half way figure, that is 118 after SP's abstention, may go further down because the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which is an alliance with the NDA in the state of Jharkhand abstained from the Lok Sabha vote on Wednesday. If JMM abstains in Friday's vote also, the half way mark remains 117 and the government gets that number
