100th anniversary of Machu Picchu's 'discovery'


The mysterious lost Inca city of Machu Picchu was discovered a 100 years ago today(July 25,2011) by American explorer Hiram Bingham.UNESCO declared the citadel a World Heritage Site in 1983 and was officially recognised as a wonder of the world in 2007.In 2007 it was named as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World after an global internet poll.

The number of visitors peaked at 858,000 in 2008 but has now been capped at 1,800 a day on the recommendation of UNESCO - which amounted to 700,000 visitors in 2010
  
And to celebrate the anniversary of the historic find, Peru has lit up the 15th-century wonder with fireworks and a breathtaking light show.A symphony orchestra played to guests 2,350 metres above sea level as the Andean city glowed in the darkness for the first time in its history.
