Gold Price hits 23-month low, slips below Rs. 25,000 -Friday June 28,2013

Gold prices hit a 23-month low on Friday June 28,2013 on heavy selling by domestic stockists and investors. The domestic selloff was triggered by a sharp plunge in global gold prices and on account of the strengthening of the Indian rupee

In Delhi market, gold prices fell by Rs. 1,150 per 10 gram to hit Rs. 25,650. These levels were last seen in August 9, 2011 according to the Press Trust of India.

At 3.44 p.m., the actively traded gold for August delivery on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) was 1.57 per cent lower at Rs. 24,977 rupees per 10 grams, after hitting a low of Rs. 24,952, a level last seen in late September 2011

In international markets, gold prices fell below $1,200 to its lowest since August 2010.

The Reserve Bank of India(RBI) squeezed gold buyers further on Thursday, ruling out any credit transactions for imports unless they were intended to make jewellery for export

Same Sex Marriages Can Resume in California,Court Rules -Friday June 28,2013

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday June 28,2013 that same-sex marriages can resume in California, a move that the Supreme Court paved the way for on Wednesday June 26,2013

Three judges on the appeals court made it possible for local governments to issue marriage certificates for gay and lesbian couples with a few words: "The stay in the above matter is dissolved effective immediately."

With the court's action, counties can now begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses.

Marriage commissioner Jared Scherer, left, officiates as Pam Shaheen, center, marries Mary Beth Gabriel at City Hall in San Francisco, Friday, June 28, 2013

The lead plaintiffs in the U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned California's same-sex marriage ban tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall on Friday June 28,2013 about an hour after a federal appeals court freed same-sex couples to obtain marriage licenses for the first time in 4 1/2 years.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris presided at the wedding of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier as hundreds of supporters looked on and cheered.

Note
  • California's SC struck down the State's Ban on Same-Sex Marriage in May 2008, ruling that the state's constitution gives "this basic civil right to (marry to) all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

  • But months later, 52% of voters backed Proposition 8 to once again restrict marriages so that they can only be between a man and a woman. The measure put gay and lesbian marriages on hold in the state, though lawsuits followed.

  • A federal appeals court later ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, though it still issued a stay on same-sex marriages until the U.S. Supreme Court could weigh in.

  • That happened in a 5-4 decision Wednesday June 26,2013

    In vitro fertilisation (IVF)

    • In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body:in vitro. The term in vitro from the Latin means in glass

    • IVF is a major treatment for infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed.
    • The process involves monitoring a woman's ovulatory process, removing ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium in a laboratory
    • When a woman's natural cycle is monitored to collect a naturally selected ovum (egg) for fertilisation, it is known as natural cycle IVF
    • The fertilised egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy
    • The first successful birth of a "Test Tube Baby", Louise Brown, occurred in 1978. Louise Brown was born as a result of natural cycle IVF.Dr. Robert Edwards holds the world's first "test-tube baby," Louise Brown, on July 25, 1978. A midwife stands in the center, with gynecologist Patrick Steptoe on the right.

    • A colloquial term for babies conceived as the result of IVF, "test tube babies", refers to the tube-shaped containers of glass or plastic resin, called test tubes, that are commonly used in chemistry labs and biology labs
    • Rober G Edwards, the physiologist who developed the treatment, was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

    ‘Three Parent Baby’

Britain is set to become the first country in the world to allow doctors to use a controversial IVF technique that would lead to the creation of babies with three parents.

The technique, which involves using DNA of three persons, will help combat genetic problems that can cause rare and debilitating conditions affecting the heart, muscles and brain. The method aimed at eradicating inherited genetic defects — was safe and its benefits outweighed ethical objections

The first “three-parent baby” could be born as early as 2015 if the proposal, approved by the government on Friday June 28,2013 is given the go-ahead by Parliament.

Professor Doug Turnbull of Newcastle University, who pioneered the technique, said he was “delighted” that it had been given the green light.

Dame Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer for England, hailed it as a “ground-breaking” procedure saying that “mitochondrial disease can have a devastating impact on people who inherit it”
