India Tv - Know all about J Jayalalithaa: An insight into her life and political journey

J Jayalalithaa inspired a cult following, and adoring followers

J Jayalalithaa was one of India's most charismatic and enigmatic personalities, single-handedly holding her own in the masculine world of Tamil politics and effectively breaking a more than 30-year-old culture of male dominance.

While there have been several female leaders across Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India, Jayalalitha came from a different background.

Other female premiers, like Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Sheikh Hasina and Sirimavo Bandaranaike, all came from political families.

Jayalalitha, on the other hand, came from a middle-class family, where her mother was a small-time actress.

On various occasions she described herself as a prim, convent-bred girl who had dreamt of a world of academic and legal studies with an interest in English theatre.

J Jayalalithaa served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for over 14 years between 1991 and 2016

J Jayalalithaa successfully built up a near-indelible personality cult through welfare schemes - and the inexpensive food and water products, branded "Amma" after her nickname, mother, that were provided to the poor.

Subsidies made up more than a third of Tamil Nadu's revenue spending, and the policies endeared her to women and children.

A landslide victory was secured by Jayalalithaa in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections held in 1991, when the party and its alliance won 225 out of the total 234 seats. She contested from two constituencies, Kangeyam and Bargur, and won both the seats comprehensively

On 24 June 1991, she became the youngest ever and the second female Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She held the position till May 12, 1996.

She remained the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from March 2, 2002 to May 12, 2006.

Jayalalithaa had to step down from her post of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in September 2014 when a trial court in Karnataka held her guilty in an 18-year-old disproportionate assets (amounting to Rs. 66.65 crore) and corruption case

On May 11, 2015, the Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa in the Disproportionate Assets case.
