The Parliament on Tuesday Dec 03,2019 passed a bill which seeks to merge two
Union Territories — Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli — into one
unit.
The Rajya Sabha passed the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 through voice vote
Lok Sabha had passed this bill on November 27,2019
The merged Union Territory will be named Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
He said the merger was supported by civil society and the elected member of Parliament of that area.
India currently has 9 UT's after the creation of the UTs of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
However, with the merger of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the number of UTs will come down to 8 UT's
