Nagaland became a state of India on Dec 01, 1963 and after elections
in January, 1964, the first Nagaland Legislative Assembly was formed on Feb11, 1964.
Nagaland was just a district in the State of Assam until 1957, known to others as "The Naga Hills". Not satisfied with such an obscure status, the leaders of various Naga tribes, in August 1957, formed the Naga People’s Convention (NPC)
In its first session held at Kohima on August 21, 1957, under the Presidentship of Late Dr. Imkongliba Ao, the NPC proposed the formation of a separate administrative unit
The Government of India agreed to the proposal and on December 1, 1957, the new administrative unit known as the Naga Hills and Tuensang Area (NHTA) was inaugurated.
In July 1960, a delegation of the NPC met the then Prime Minister of India, the late Jawaharlal Nehru and a 16 point agreement was arrived at, which inter-alia provided for the formulation of a separate State for the Nagas within the Indian Union to be known as "Nagaland"
On February 18, 1961 an Interim Body of 42 members was constituted. This was to function as the de-facto legislature.
On August 21, 1962 the then Prime Minister Pandit Nehru introduced a Bill in the Parliament for the formation of Nagaland as a full-fledged State. The Act provides for the formulation of the State of Nagaland as the 16th State in the Indian Union, and on December 1, 1963, President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the State of Nagaland. The late Mr. Vishnu Sahay became the first Governor of Nagaland.
In 1974, the strength of the Legislative assembly was increased to the present strength of 60 members.The normal tenure of the House is 5 years(unless dissolved)and all the members are elected on the basis of adult franchise from single-seat constituencies
The Election Commission of India announced on Jan 11,2013 the dates for polling in the 3 North Eastern States - Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.
The Terms of the Legislative Assemblies of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura will normally expire as follows:

K L Chishi, former chief minister and Congress candidate from
Dimapur-I, is the richest with movable and immovable assets totalling Rs
50.19 crore. He is followed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is NPF
candidate from Northern Angami-II seat, with assets totalling Rs 30.07
crore.Third in the list is Congress candidate I Imkong from Jangpetkong constituency with assets of Rs 18.23 crore
Nagaland Polled 83% Voting - Feb 23,2013
Nagaland witnessed a high 83.29 per cent turnout of voters to elect 59 members of the 60-member Assembly on Saturday with the polling by and large peaceful.
Election to the Tuensang sadar seat was countermanded following the death of Congress candidate P Chuba Chang on Friday Feb 22,2013.The election to the Tuensang seat will be held on March 23 and counting on for it on March 26,2013
Prominent candidates whose fates were sealed in EVMs were Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie, Opposition Leader Tokheho Yepthomi, Congress president SI Jamir and former Home Minister Imkong L Imchen from Koridang
Counting will be held on February 28 for the 59 seats.

The political parties in
fray are ruling Naga People's Front (NPF), opposition Congress, BJP,
NCP, RJD, JD(U), SP, United Nagaland Democratic Party and a sizable
number of independents
A total of 189 nominations
for Nagaland Assembly polls have been found valid after scrutiny, while
42 nominations which include stand-by candidates and some independents
have been rejected.
Nagaland Home Minister detained; cash, arms seized
Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen was on Monday Feb 18,2013 detained near Wokha district for allegedly carrying a cache of arms and ammunition and Rs. 1.10 crore in cash in a vehicle
Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen was going to his constituency Koridanga in Mokokchung district from Kohima when Assam Rifles personnel, conducting search of vehicles near Wokha district, found the arms and ammunition, liquor and cash
Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen is the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) candidate from Koridanga and is also the NPF campaign in-charge of Mokokchung district.

On February 16, an Election Commission surveillance team had seized Rs. one crore cash from a helicopter allegedly being used by a candidate of the Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF) in Nagaland

Nagaland may get first woman MLA
Dr Yangerla is one of only
two women contesting the February 23 assembly elections in Nagaland, the
only state that has never yet had a woman MLA
BJP is the only political
party that has given a ticket to a woman. M Rakhila Lakiumong (61) is
the widow of former minister and four-time legislator Lakiumong who died
when he was a sitting MLA from Tuensang, Nagaland's easternmost
district. Rakhila will contest from the same constituency.
Naga People's Front(NPF) which
leads the ruling coalition and the opposition Congress have few real
answers for why they have fielded no women for this election.
"We are
open to everyone and want women to come into elections but none came
forward this time," Medokul Sophie, general secretary of the Nagaland
Pradesh Congress Committee says.
"We encouraged women to come forward
but did not receive applications. Ultimately this is politics where
winnability matters, not a sport where participation is what matters,"
says K G Kenye, a former minister and now the NPF's secretary general

Congress candidate and MLA of Tuensang Sadar-II Assembly constituency, P
Chuba, died here this morning, party sources said. Chang died following
a brief illness at a hospital in Kohima on Feb 22,2013Friday morning

result of the sudden death of the Congress candidate, polls for Tuensang

Nagaland Goes to Assembly Polls -Saturday Feb 23,2013
A total 11,93,384 electorate - 6,03,31 male and 5,89,535 women voters
will exercise their franchise today to decide the fate of 185 candidates
About 30 % votes were cast in the first 3 hours of polling
in Nagaland for its 60-member House amidst
unprecedented security.
Election is, however, being held for 59 seats only on
Saturday as the Election

Assembly Election Result -Thursday Feb 28,2013
A total of 59 halls have been provided for counting in the districts
with three-tier security layer in each. Over 10,000 counting personnel,
including counting supervisors and counting assistants, are engaged in
the counting process along with micro observers and Election Commission
appointed observers.The entire process will be videographed.
In consonance with an Election Commission directive, the international border has been sealed
