Meghalaya is going to the assembly polls on Feb 23,2013 for the 9th time to elect a new govt and had seen 22 Govts since its formation in 1972
Fractured Mandate given by the people in the past polls had resulted in the election of hung assemblies and the failure of the political parties to make their coalition politics work
The Incumbent CM Dr Mukul Sangma led INC-UDP coalition govt has fielded candidates in all the 60 seats
The National People's Party(NPP)a Regional Party recognised by the EC in Manipur (launched in Meghalaya by P A Sangma) has fielded 27 candidates mostly in Garo Hills
The UDP which has strong influence in Khasi and Jaintia Hills Region and a sizeable presence in Garo Hills Area has fielded 56 candidates
NCP which won 15 seats in 2008 and 12 of the 14 NCP Legislators including the two sons of P A Sangma have shifted their support to NPP
History of Meghalaya
- Meghalaya was formed by carving out two districts from the State of Assam: the United Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills and the Garo Hills on January 21, 1972
- In 1971, the Parliament passed the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971, which conferred full statehood on the Autonomous State of Meghalaya
- Before attaining full statehood, Meghalaya was given semi-autonomous status in 1970
- At the time of Indian independence in 1947, present day Meghalaya constituted two districts of Assam and enjoyed limited autonomy within the state of Assam.
The Election Commission on Thursday Feb 7,2013 found valid the nomination papers of 351 aspirants for the February 23 assembly elections in Meghalaya and rejected the papers of four candidates.
Nomination papers of one candidate each of the ruling Congress and its ally, the HSPDP, and two of the nominees of the United Democratic Party (UDP) were rejected.

Election officials said an electorate of 15,03,907, including 7,59,608 women, exercised their franchise in the elections being contested by 345 candidates belonging to 15 political parties and independents, including 25 women.

Mukul Sangma sworn-in as Meghalaya Chief Minister
The Congress emerged the single largest party with 29 seats - two short of a majority in the 60-member house. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which secured two seats, and 11 independent legislators have extended "unconditional support" to the Congress.
Mukul Manda Sangma(47) on Tuesday March 5,2013 was sworn-in as the Meghalaya chief minister for the second time in a row by Governor RS Mooshahary administered the oath of office, on the lawns of the Raj Bhavan.
Mukul Sangma took oath as the state's 26th chief minister in the presence of hundreds of Congress legislators, leaders of other political groupings and senior government officials.
Profile -Mukul Sangma
- Mukul Sangma, a medical practitioner, gave up his government job as medical and health officer in Tura health centre and plunged into the electoral fray in 1993 and contested and won the Ampatigiri assembly constituency in West Garo Hills as an independent candidate.
- At the age of 33, Mukul Sangma bagged a cabinet berth and held various posts as minister of taxation, information and public relations and others.
- In 2005, he was appointed deputy chief minister in-charge of home and education departments
Mukul Sangma first assumed office April 20, 2010, replacing veteran Congress leader DD Lapang.
