About the Award
CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2012,the 7th season recognizes the Indian(s) whose contribution to the country in a calendar year has strengthened the foundation of our society and has helped build Brand India in the process.
Instituted in 2006, CNN-IBN Indian of the Year has been the benchmark for credibility and excellence in media awards.
The recipients of this prestigious award have included -
PM Manmohan Singh (2006)
E Sreedharan (2007)
G Madhavan Nair (2008)
A R Rahman (2009)
 Bihar CM Nitish Kumar (2010) and
 Anna Hazare and team (2011).

Selection Process  
1)The IBN Editorial Board draws the list of Nominees 
2)'The Jury' ratifies the list of Nominees 
3)The Electoral College Votes  and
4)The Citizens Vote 

The Electoral College
Eminent citizens of the country come together to form the Electoral College.

The body comprises of more than 150 contemporary Indian leaders; super achievers who have earned a name for themselves in fields such as politics, bureaucracy, defence, academics, corporate, entertainment, sports, science and literature.

The CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Awards were presented in 5 categories -

  • Entertainment
  • Business and 
  • Public Service 

at a ceremony in New Delhi on December 12,2012

1)Viswanathan Anand named CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2012 in Sports Category

2)Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won the Indian of the Year in Politics Category for being the architect of the BJP's win in the state

3)Yusuf Hamied of Cipla won the Indian of the Year award in Business Category

4)Irrfan Khan won the Indian of the Year in Entertainment Category for contributing to make a splash both in domestic as well as international cinema.

5)Healthcare legend Dr Devi Shetty was chosen the Indian of the Year in the Public Service category.


6)Special achievement:
1)2012 London Olympics Bronze Medalist Boxer MC Mary Kom
2) Actor Aamir Khan and Team Satyamev Jayate and
3) Agni Putri Tessy Thomas and Team DRDO
were awarded for special achievements in their fields
