Match Result     MI won by 9 wickets
MOM                Hardik Pandya(MI)for his 2/20(3 Overs)

An inspired bowling performance by Lasith Malinga 3/35 backed up by a fine half-century from Rohit Sharma crushed Kolkata Knight Riders' dreams of making it to the playoffs as Mumbai Indians registered an easy nine-wicket win to finish the group stage ranked No.1. One side's sorrow became another side's joy with Mumbai's win also meaning Sunrisers Hyderabad became the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs.

Both Hyderabad and Kolkata finished with 12 points each but a superior net run-rate saw the Kane Williamson-led side enter the qualifiers. Mumbai will play second-ranked Chennai in Qualifier 1 while Hyderabad will face Delhi Chargers in the Eliminator.

Malinga was at his lethal best returning figures of 3/35 that helped restrict Kolkata to a below-par 133/7. The target was never really going to worry Mumbai and the hosts led by Rohit's 55* and Suryakumar Yadav's 46* romped home in 16.1 overs.

Sent into bat on a sluggish Wankhede surface, Kolkata started off slowly but Chris Lynn soon upped the ante with a six over mid-wicket against Mitchell McClenaghan. While Shubman Gill struggled, Lynn carried on his merry ways first thumping Malinga for a four and six and then carting leg-spinner Rahul Chahar into the stands twice over.

Kolkata raced to 49/0 in the first six overs but lost their way immediately after the field restrictions were relaxed. Hardik Pandya struck with the very first ball of his spell trapping Gill right in front of the stumps for a 16-ball 9 and in his next over got rid of Lynn as well for 41.

It was rather painful viewing for the next few overs for a Kolkata fan as Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik failed to give any momentum to the innings. Malinga finally put Karthik out of his misery for 3 (9) but the biggest wicket of the night undoubtedly came in the next legal delivery when the Sri Lankan got rid of Andre Russell for a golden duck with a searing bouncer.

The scoreboard reading a sorry 73/4 after 13 overs, Uthappa who was at one point of time on 9 off 21 balls finally broke the shackles with a four and a six off Bumrah. Nitish Rana, coming in at No. 6 tried his best to restore some parity to proceedings. He creamed three sixes during his stay at the crease before becoming Malinga's third victim for a 13-ball 26.

The final flourish so desperately needed by Kolkata, never arrived as they huffed and puffed their way through the final few overs. Uthappa (40) struck a four and three sixes during his knock but still could only manage a strike of 85.10. For Mumbai, Malinga was the pick of the bowlers while Jasprit Bumrah and Pandya also chipped in with two wickets each.

Mumbai were initially circumspect in their chase before Quinton de Kock decided to turn on a switch in the fourth over and give Russell a little taste of his own medicine. The left-hander smoked two back-to-back sixes and a four in Russell's first over which went for 21 as the hosts reached 46/0 at the end of the power play.

The strategic time-out then as it has done innumerable times this tournament claimed another victim with de Kock (30) falling to Prasidh Krishna straight after the six-over mark. The wicket, however, belonged to Karthik much more than Prasidh. De Kock top-edged a short of a length delivery straight up but for a long time it seemed the ball would fall in no man's land. Karthik though was having none of it. He sprinted back at full tilt and with the ball still going away dived to pluck an absolute stunner.

Whatever opening Kolkata thought would they have got with de Kock's wicket was firmly shut Rohit. The Mumbai captain hasn't been in the best of touches so far this season but with no pressure on his shoulders regained some timely form ahead of the playoffs.

He kept the scoreboard ticking and found the boundaries as well every now and then. Rohit found an able ally in Suryakumar Yadav, who himself having looked off-colour this season, spent some important time in the middle.

The Mumbai captain reached his half-century - just the second of the season - with a push to deep cover and the hosts wrapped up the chase soon after with 23 balls to spare.

Rohit finished unbeaten on 55 off 48 balls that included eight fours while Yadav slammed a quickfire 27-ball 46* which was laced with five fours and two sixes.

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma dedicated his half-century scored against two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Mumbai on Sunday to his daughter Samaira

During Rajasthan Royal's final league stage match against Delhi Capitals, Riyan Parag, aged 17 years and 175 days, achieved the milestone in the final over of the visitors' innings when he hit Trent Boult for a six.

Earlier, another Rajasthan Royals batsman Sanju Samson held the record of being the youngest half-centurion in the T20 league.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn Crowned Rama X of Thailand in Dazzling Show of Pageantry Saturday May 04,2019

King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Rama X of Thailand, was crowned Saturday May 04,2019 in a dazzling show of pageantry, laced with Hindu and Buddhist ritual, vowing to reign "with righteousness" on behalf of the Thai people.

Starting at the auspicious time of 10:09 am (0309 GMT), the public was granted a rare window into the cloistered halls of Thai power as the key rituals of the three-day coronation began.

King Vajiralongkorn is the tenth monarch of the Chakri dynasty, which has reigned since 1782.

He ascended the throne over two years ago following his the death of his beloved father, but waited until after a long mourning period before setting his coronation date.

Saturday's sombre ceremony opened with the white-gowned king -- the folds of his robe leaving one shoulder bared -- receiving sacred water from across Thailand and dabbing it gently across his face at a shrine inside the Grand Palace complex.

A cannon salute marked the moment as pipes played and Buddhist monks chanted.

Several grey-haired Hindu Brahmins were also in attendance at the syncretic ceremony, which symbolises Rama X's transformation from a human to divine figure.

He later took his seat under the umbrella of state and was handed the Great Crown of Victory, a tiered gold 7.3-kilogram (16-pound) headpiece topped by a diamond from India.

Uttering his first, brief royal command he vowed to reign "with righteousness" for the benefit of the Thai people.

His fourth wife, Suthida -- married in a surprise ceremony days before the coronation -- was invested as Queen, kneeling in respect in front of her husband who sat on a throne.

For most Thais, it is the first time they have witnessed the pomp and grandeur of a coronation -- the last was in 1950 for the king's beloved father Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn marries head of his personal guard force Wednesday May 01,2019

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has married the deputy head of his personal guard force and gave her the title of queen just days before his official coronation.

The surprise announcement was carried in the Royal Gazette and footage from Wednesday May 01,2019's wedding ceremony was shown on the nightly Royal News segment aired on all Thai television channels.

Thai television, which broadcast the royal order on Wednesday evening May 01,2019, showed a video of Queen Suthida prostrating herself before the king, to whom she, according to the announcer, presented a tray of flowers and joss sticks, and in return was bestowed traditional gifts associated with royal power.

Vajiralongkorn, 66, also known by the title King Rama X, became constitutional monarch after the death of his revered father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in October 2016, after 70 years on the throne.

He is due to be officially crowned in elaborate Buddhist and Brahmin ceremonies on Saturday, followed by a procession through Bangkok the next day.

In 2014, Vajiralongkorn appointed Suthida Tidjai, a former flight attendant for Thai Airways, as a deputy commander of his bodyguard unit.

Some royal observers and foreign media had linked Suthida romantically with the king, but the palace had previously never acknowledged a relationship between them.

The king made Suthida a full general in the Royal Thai Army in December 2016, and the deputy commander of the king's personal guard in 2017.

He also made her a Thanpuying, a royal title meaning Lady.

Among the dignitaries at the wedding were Prayuth Chan-ocha, the leader of the military government that has run Thailand since a 2014 army coup, as well as other members of the royal family and palace advisers, the wedding footage showed.

Vajiralongkorn has had three previous marriages and divorced his previous wife, with whom he has a son, in 2014.

French police clash with protesters in Paris May Day rally Wednesday May 01,2019

Police have fired tear gas to push back masked demonstrators in central Paris, as thousands of people used an annual May Day rally to protest against French President Emmanuel Macron's 's economic policies.

Labour unions and so-called "Yellow Vest" protesters were on the streets across France on Wednesday May 01,2019, days after Macron outlined a response to months of street protests that included tax cuts worth around five billion euros ($5.6bn)

In the run-up to the main march in Paris, the city was on lockdown with more than 7,400 police deployed with orders from Macron to take an "extremely firm stance" if faced with violence

Before the main rally took place, police tried to disperse a group of hooded and masked protesters who had converged at the front of the traditional May Day labour union march in Paris

Riot police repeatedly used tear gas and sting grenades to try to control the crowd gathering near Paris' Montparnasse train station

Protesters wearing hoods or yellow vests responded by throwing projectiles at the police. Television footage showed a van with its windows smashed. Local media reports said some people were injured in the clashes

By mid-afternoon, the main march crossing the southern part of the capital was finally able to move amid relative calm.

The yellow vest protests, named after the high-visibility jackets that they wear, began in November over fuel tax increases, but have evolved into a sometimes violent revolt against politicians and a government seen as out of touch.

2018-19 UEFA Champions League Semi-final First Leg FC Barcelona Vs Liverpool @ Camp Nou - FC Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-0 Wednesday May 01,2019

Lionel Messi scored a brace as Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-0 in the SF-1 on Wednesday May 01,2019 to edge closer to the Champions League final.

Messi scored his 599th and 600th goals for Barcelona to subdue a Liverpool lineup that had outplayed the hosts for long stretches at Camp Nou on Wednesday but finally succumbed to the Argentine's mastery.

His double and Luis Suarez' early goal against his former club gave Barcelona a commanding win.
Messi has won the Champions League four times but his hunger to restore Barcelona as the best club team on the continent was evident against Liverpool, when he had to almost singlehandedly quash a ferocious comeback attempt by the visitors after Suarez' 26th-minute opener.

Messi doubled the lead from a rebound with 15 minutes left and followed that up by curling in a perfectly struck free kick in the 82nd

Mohamed Salah nearly scored a valuable away goal for Liverpool to take back to next week's return leg at Anfield when he hit the post late.

"It is not over because we are going to a ground that is very difficult, with lots of history, that presses rivals, but we are happy with today's game," said Messi.

"This is the critical moment, the best moment, and we have to be more united than ever. At the start of the year we said we would do this together."

Messi's double also took his overall tally for the season to 48 goals and his Champions League-leading tally to 12 this campaign.

2018-19 UEFA Champions League Semi-inal First Leg Tottenham Hotspur Vs Ajax@London - Ajax beat Tottenham Hotspur 1- 0 Tuesday April 30,2019

Ajax have won the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal against Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in London.

On Tuesday, Donny van de Beek gave the youthful Dutch side the win, taking Ajax to the first European Cup final in 23 years.

Depleted by injuries and suspension, Tottenham gifted the visitors too much space to string together slick passes early on, and the 22-year-old Van de Beek ghosted into the penalty area to receive a through ball from Hakim Ziyech before knocking a shot past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 15th minute.

Brief look at the composition of the Lower House of the Indian Parliament

A brief look at the composition of the Lower House of the Indian Parliament and how the number of seats is determined for each state in the Union highlights how India’s electoral representation is influenced by population.
Seat division as per 1971 Census
The Lok Sabha did not always have 543 seats. Between 1952 and 1976, the total number of seats in the Lok Sabha rose steadily. During the 1952 elections, the Lok Sabha consisted of 489 seats. In the 1957 and 1962 elections, the Lok Sabha consisted of 494 seats. The 7th Amendment in 1956 capped the maximum number of elected seats at 520 — 500 from India's states and 20 from Union Territories.
In the first two Lok Sabha, there were also some two-member constituencies, wherein, as the name suggests, the electorate would elect two members from a single constituency. This practice was discontinued prior to the elections to the third Lok Sabha.
In the 1967 elections, the Lok Sabha composition underwent a major change as the number of seats rose to 520. The dramatic rise in the number of seats could be attributed to the population data of the 1961 Census. In the 1971 general elections, the number of seats in the Lok Sabha reduced by two – from 520 to 518
With the passing of the 14th and the 31st Amendment, the maximum number of directly elected seats rose to 552, where 530 come from states and 20 from the Union Territories.
The 1977 elections, as epoch making as it was, also marked the beginning of a stable Lok Sabha. The number of seats remained at 542 until the 2004 elections. The number of seats were determined through the population Census of 1971. However, in 1976, the Congress government passed the 42nd Amendment, which froze the delimitation of Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assembly constituencies until after the 2001 Census. This was done by amending Article 170 (relating to composition of Legislative Assemblies) of the Constitution.
The sixth Lok Sabha also saw the number of nominated members being fixed at two – both belonging to the Anglo-Indian community. Prior to the sixth Lok Sabha, there was another nominated member belonging to the North East Frontier Agency (modern-day Arunachal Pradesh). Moreover, in the first three Lok Sabha, Andaman & Nicobar, Goa, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep too had nominated MPs.
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government passed the 91st Constitutional Amendment Bill, which extended the stay on redrawing of India's electoral maps till 2026.
Currently, the Lok Sabha consists of 543 directly elected seats and two nominated members from the Anglo-Indian community.
Population factor key to determining seats
The Delimitation Commission of India, which is entrusted with the job of creating constituencies that have roughly the same population, subject to geographical considerations and the boundaries of the states. The Delimitation Commission was last formed in 2002 after the passing of the 84th Amendment. It was formed under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court Justice Kuldip Singh. However, due to the ban on increasing the number of seats, the commission only redrew the boundaries of the already existing constituencies. While the exercise created some new constituencies, they did not add to the existing 543 constituencies in the Lok Sabha.
The present composition of the Lok Sabha is based on the 1971 Census, as stated earlier in the report. As per the delimitation in 1971, even a Union Territory with a population of 10 lakh would get its own constituency. The average population size of the Lok Sabha constituency was pegged at 10 lakh. This meant that the seats were allotted to states in the ratio of 1:1,00,00,00. This ratio also roughly corresponded to the total population of India in 1971 — 54 crore.
However, with the Union government prioritising family planning and population control across India, the role of the Delimitation Commission greatly diminished in the next three decades. This had an indirect impact on the redrawing of the electoral maps. The main reason behind the NDA government’s push for the 84th Amendment too is attributed to the uneven successes of family planning in India.
While states in south India have achieved greater successes in population control, the same is not true about states in the Hindi heartland. By imposing an all-round delimitation of seats, there are high chances of states that were successful in population control losing Lok Sabha seats, while those failing to control their population gaining additional seats.
However, with India’s population more than doubling in the last five decades, there is now a crisis of malapportionment of the electorate. While a MP in Uttar Pradesh caters to around 3 million people in his constituency, the figure goes down to just 1.8 million in Tamil Nadu.
In 2001, political scientist Alistair McMillan documented the drastic over- and under-representation of the electorate. McMillan calculated that Tamil Nadu should have had seven fewer Lok Sabha seats, while Uttar Pradesh should have gained seven more. A Carnegie report in 2019 further added that in the event of a population-centric delimitation of seats, the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan would gain 22 seats while the southern states will lose 17 seats.
Current composition in numbers
The state of Uttar Pradesh, which is the most populous in India, has 80 Lok Sabha seats, followed by Maharashtra with 48 seats. The eastern state of West Bengal sends 42 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, Bihar contributes 40 seats in the Lok Sabha. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu contributes 39 seats to the Lower House.
Except for Delhi, which sends 7 MPs to the Lok Sabha, every other Union Territory is only represented by a single Member of Parliament. The North East states of Sikkim, Mizoram and Nagaland too send one MPs each to the Lower House of the Parliament. Others states in the region like Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya contribute two seats each. Goa, India's smallest state, too sends two representatives to the Lok Sabha.
Gujarat elects 26 MPs while Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh send 25 MPs each to the Lok Sabha. Karnataka consists of 28 constituencies while Madhya Pradesh comprises of 29 constituencies. Kerala, Odisha and Telangana send 20, 21 and 17 MPs respectively to the Lower House of the Parliament. Punjab, Haryana and Chhattisgarh elect 13, 10 and 11 Lok Sabha members respectively. States of Assam and Jharkhand send 14 MPs each to the Lok Sabha. The state of Jammu and Kashmir sends six MPs to the Lok Sabha

State Party in India - All You Need To Know

State party
Each of the 29 states in India has at least one political party which comes under the category of state party. As of March 2019, the Election Commission of India recognises 52 political parties as such. Many of these parties have tasted political power at some point: either in coalition with a national party or single-handedly. At present, Shiv Sena, Janata Dal (Secular), Aam Aadmi Party, Telugu Desam Party, Janata Dal (United), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Biju Janata Dal, Sikkim Democratic Front, National People’s Party and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party are the political parties recognised as such which are in power in different states.
In order to be recognised as a state party, a political party needs to fulfil at least one of the 4 criteria laid down by the Election Commission of India.
1)A political party will be recognised as a state party if it wins 3% of the total seats in the Legislative Assembly of the state (subject to a minimum of three seats)
2)Alternatively, a party must win one Lok Sabha seat for every 25 Lok Sabha seats allotted for the state in order to become a state party.
The third and fourth criteria seem comparatively simpler for any registered political party to fulfil.
3)A political party needspoll at least 6% of votes in a state during a Lok Sabha or Assembly election. In addition, it also needs to win at least one Lok Sabha or two Legislative Assembly seats.
4)Finally, a political party will be recognised as a state party if it wins at least eight percent votes in a state during the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly elections.
In the past few years, many political parties have been derecognised for failing to secure minimum number of seats and vote share as prescribed by the Election Commission. Some of them include Vaiko-led Pattali Makkal Katchi and Manipur’s People’s Party. While the former was derecognised in 2010, the latter — which is the oldest political outfit in Manipur — its state party status in 2013
Benefits of being a state party or national party
A state party is allowed exclusive use of its allotted symbol during Assembly or parliamentary elections in a state where it is recognised as such. For example: The DMK is allowed to use its symbol “Rising Sun” in Assembly or general elections in Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, a national party is allowed exclusive use of its allotted symbol during state or Lok Sabha elections across the country
Recognised state or national parties also get other benefits from the Election Commission. A candidate belonging to such parties needs only one proposer for filing the nomination. These parties are also entitled to two sets of electoral rolls free of cost at the time of revision of rolls, while their candidates get one copy of electoral roll for no cost during general elections
Since 1998, these political parties also get broadcasting rights over All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan during Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Both national and state parties also enjoy the privileges of utilising star campaigners for their election campaigns. A recognised national or state party can have a maximum of 40 star campaigners during a state or national election. Notably, the travel expenses of star campaigners cannot be accounted for in the election expense accounts of candidates.

National Party in India - All You Need To Know

The Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, lays down the criteria for declaring any registered political party as a national party or a state party
As per the order, a registered political party needs to fulfil at least one of the three conditions to become a national party
  1. Under the first condition, a political party needs to win minimum 2% of seats in the Lok Sabha (11 seats) from at least three different states
  2. Another way of gaining national party status is by polling at least 6% of votes in four states in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, in addition to winning four Lok Sabha seats
  3. A political party may also secure recognition as national party if it is recognised as a state party in four or more states.

Notably, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress became a national party in 2016 through the third route. By August 2016, Trinamool was a recognised state party in West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Interestingly, the BSP too became a national party for the first time in 2001 in a similar manner. At the time, BSP was already a recognised state party in four states: Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, the party won over six percent of votes in these states during the Assembly elections.
There are 7 political parties with the tag of national party:
  1. Bharatiya Janata Party
  2.  Indian National Congress
  3. Communist Party of India
  4. Communist Party of India (Marxist)
  5. Nationalist Congress Party
  6. Bahujan Samaj Party and
  7.  Trinamool Congress.

In 2010, Rashtriya Janata Dal, led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, lost its national party status after performing poorly in Jharkhand, where it used to be recognised as a state party. However, CPM, CPI and NCP were also at the risk of losing their national party tag after failing to perform well in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, they received a respite after the Election Commission decided to review performances of political parties on a 10 year-basis in 2016.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for breaching British court order in 2012

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was sentenced on Wednesday May 01,2019 to 50 weeks in jail for breaching a British court order seven years ago, when he took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden

The Australian whistleblower, who was arrested on 11 April after Ecuador gave him up, will serve the nearly one-year sentence while fighting a separate attempt to transfer him to the United States.

The 47-year-old, his shaggy beard neatly trimmed, raised his fist to supporters in the public gallery at London's Southwark Crown Court as he was taken down to the cells.
They responded by raising theirs and shouting "Shame on you!" towards the court.
Assange fled to Ecuador's embassy in 2012 after a British judge ordered his extradition to face Swedish allegations of sexual assault and rape, which he strongly denied.
He claimed the allegations were a pretext to transfer him to the United States, where he feared prosecution over the release by WikiLeaks of millions of classified documents.
At the sentencing hearing, his lawyer Mark Summers said Assange had been "gripped" by "reasonable fears" that he would face rendition to the US.
"As threats rained down on him from America, they overshadowed everything as far as he was concerned," the lawyer said.
In a letter read out on his behalf, Assange expressed regret, saying: "I did what I thought at the time was the best or perhaps the only thing that I could have done."
There is no longer an active investigation in Sweden and the extradition request has lapsed.
However, Assange is facing a US extradition request, which was only revealed following his dramatic arrest, when he was dragged shouting from the embassy by police.
US hacking conspiracy charge
Assange appeared in court within hours of his arrest, and a judge found him guilty of breaching his bail conditions.
The biggest concern for his lawyers is the US extradition request. An initial hearing in the case has been scheduled for this Thursday May 02,2019
The US indictment charges him with "conspiracy" for working with former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to crack a password stored on Department of Defence computers in March 2010.
Manning passed hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks, exposing US military wrongdoing in the Iraq war and diplomatic secrets about scores of countries around the world.
Assange could face up to five years in jail if found guilty, although his team is fighting his extradition and the process could take years.
The charge has raised serious concerns among organisations advocating free speech, including politicians such as British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
WikiLeaks is also back in the news in the United States, over its alleged role in the leak of Hillary Clinton's emails in 2016 US presidential election.
The Swedish claims against Assange date back to 2010, when he was at the centre of a global storm over WikiLeaks' exposures.
The sexual assault claim expired in 2015, but while the rape claim was dropped in 2017, the alleged victim wants the case reopened.
If Stockholm makes a formal extradition request, Britain must decide whether to consider it before or after that of the United States.
A group of British lawmakers have urged the Swedish case to take precedence, saying the rights of the alleged victims must not be lost in the political row
