New Zealand chased down 348 to end an eight-match losing streak in international cricket

Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal made their debut for India in the first ODI at Seddon Park in Hamilton as hosts New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw joined an elite list as soon as they walked to bat in the first ODI against New Zealand.

Shaw and Agarwal became only the fourth opening pair for India to have made their debut in the same ODI.

The last instance when two debutants opened the batting for India was when KL Rahul and Karun Nair batted against Zimbabwe in 2016.

Instances where two debutantes opening the innings for IND in ODIs.
  1. Sunil Gavaskar and Sudhir Naik vs ENG in 1974
  2. Parthasarathy Sharma and Dilip Vengsarkar vs NZ in 1976
  3. KL Rahul and Karun Nair vs ZIM in 2016
  4. P Shaw and M Agarwal vs NZ in 2020

Prithivi Shaw 20(21 Balls 4x3) and Mayank Agarwal 32(31 Balls 4x6) gave India a brisk start and brought up the fifty inside 8 overs, becoming the first Indian opening pair to put up a fifty-run stand on ODI debut.

Both Agarwal and Shaw have been called-up as replacements. Prithvi Shaw was named in the squad after Shikhar Dhawan was declared unfit and Agarwal came in as Rohit’s cover after the latter injured his calf muscle during the 5th T20I.

Mayank and Prithvi came out to open the batting for India as Virat Kohli decided to stick with KL Rahul in the middle order

K L Rahul became the first India batsman since 2013 to score 50 or more from No. 5 or below at a strike rate of more than 150 when batting first

Ever since his comeback into the Indian team after the 2019 World Cup, Shreyas Iyer has been among the most consistent batsmen in the side

In 9 ODIs since August 2019, when Iyer returned to the team, he has averaged 53, with a strike rate of 104.95 (the best among Indians who have faced at least 100 balls since then)

In 16 T20Is in the same period, Iyer has an average of 33.40 at a strike rate of 138.01. He is placed third and fourth on the highest run-scorers' lists for ODIs and T20Is respectively since August, and quietly, Iyer has become an important member of a batting line-up

After going more than five years without committing an over-rate offence, India have now had to pay fines in three consecutive matches, the latest a whopping 80% of their match fee after being found four overs short of the target in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton

Highest successful chase vs India in ODIs

359 by AUS, Mohali 2019
348 by NZ, Hamilton 2020*
322 by PAK, Mohali 2007
322 by SL, The Oval 2017
