Former India all-rounder Bapu Nadkarni passed away in Mumbai on Friday January 17,2020 due to age-related ailments at the age of 86
The former
Maharashtra captain was best known for bowling a record 21 maidens on
the trot in a Test match against England.
The Nashik-born made his Test debut against New Zealand in Delhi in
1955 and played his last Test at Auckland against the same opponents in
1968.
Known for his accuracy and economical bowling, Nadkarni recorded
Test match figures of 32-24-23-0 against Pakistan at Kanpur and
34-24-24-1 in Delhi during the 1960-61 home series.
Left-arm spinner Nadkarni played 41 Tests for India between 1955-68,
scoring 1414 runs and scalping 88 wickets and considered one of the most
economical bowlers ever in the game, conceding just 1.67 runs per over
in his Test career.
Nadkarni played 41 Tests for India between 1955 and 1968, scoring
1,414 runs with a century, and taking 88 wickets including a career-best
6/43. His greatest strength was, however, his accuracy while bowling,
which helped him retire with a career economy rate of 1.67 in Test
matches.
He achieved the 21 successive maidens feat in the
fourth Test against England in Chennai (then Madras) in 1964. Though he
did not take a wicket then, his impressive figures read 32-27-5-0.
Nadkarni’s stats on that day were 32-27-5-0, broken into four spells of 3-3-0-0, 7-5-2-0, 19-18-1-0, and 3-1-2-0. He sent down 131 consecutive dot balls — or 21 overs and five balls without conceding a single run.
