South Africa trail by 565 Runs with 7 wickets remaining in the first innings
With his century on the second day of the second Test against South Africa in Pune, Indian captain Virat Kohli became part of a distinguished list. He became only the 4th captain to score a century in his 50th Test as captain after - 1)Stephen Fleming(NZ)
In the first Test of their Sri Lanka tour in 2003, New Zealand Captain Stephen Fleming
scored a majestic 274 not out in his 50th Test as captain. At that
moment, he became the first player to have scored at least a century in
the 50th Test as captain. Although the match was drawn, Fleming scored a
fifty in the second innings as well to walk away with the player of the
match honors.
2)Steve Waugh(Australia)
In July of 2003 at Darwin, he joined Stephen Fleming as only the
second captain to have scored a ton in his 50th Test. Against a
weak-looking Bangladesh attack, Waugh remained unbeaten on 100 in 133
balls to help Australia win the first Test by an innings and 132 runs.
3)Alastair Cook(England)
On 22nd July 2016, Sir Alastair scored a glorious 105 off 172 balls
against a strong Pakistan line-up to join Steve Waugh and to score a ton
in the 50th Test as captain
Virat Kohli scores 7th double-century and 7000 Test runs
138 - Number of innings taken by Virat Kohli to complete 7,000 Test runs. Only three batsmen have got there quicker:
Wally Hammond (131 innings), Virender Sehwag (134) and Sachin Tendulkar
(136). Garry Sobers and Kumar Sangakkara also took 138 innings to
complete 7, 000 runs.
7 - Double-centuries for Kohli in Tests, the most among Indian
batsmen. He has gone past Tendulkar and Sehwag who had six
double-centuries each.
Now only Don Bradman (12), Sangakkara (11) and
Brian Lara (9) have more double tons
Wally Hammond and Mahela Jayawardene also made seven.
40 -
Kohli has scored seven double-hundreds in a span of 40 Tests. He scored
his first double-century against West Indies in June 2016 in his 42nd
Test.
Since June 2016,
no other batsman has scored more than two double-centuries. Azhar Ali,
Alastair Cook and Steven Smith have hit two each. All other India
batsmen combined have hit only three double-centuries.
169 - The previous highest score by an India captain against
South Africa - before Kohli's double-century - which was by Tendulkar in
Cape Town in 1996-97. Overall, Kohli is the 7th Captain to score a double-century against South Africa and first since Michael Clarke in 2012
6 - Number of different Teams against
whom Kohli has scored double-centuries - Bangladesh, England, New
Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Only two others have
done it against six teams: Sangakkara and Younis Khan. Australia is the
only team against whom Kohli has played without scoring a
double-hundred.
5 - Number of India batsmen to make a 250+ score
in Tests. Kohli joined VVS Laxman, Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Karun Nair
in doing so. Sehwag made four 250-plus scores while the others have made
one each. Kohli is the first India captain to achieve this. Kohli beat
his previous highest score of 243 against Sri Lanka made in 2017
225 -Partnership
between Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja - the highest for the fifth wicket
for India against South Africa surpassing 220 between Tendulkar and
Sehwag in Bloemfontein in 2001/02.
The 178-run stand between Kohli and
Ajinkya Rahane for the fourth wicket is also an Indian record against
South Africa bettering 145 between Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly at
the Wanderers in 1996/97.
27 -
Test matches taken by Keshav Maharaj to reach the milestone of 100
wickets - the fifth South African spinner to reach the milestone. Among
the five, only Hugh Tayfield has reached there in fewer matches (22).
Virat Kohli became the third cricketer after Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and Younis
Khan of Pakistan to hit double tons against 6 different Test playing
nations.
Of the 7 teams Kohli has played against so
far -- Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the
West Indies and Bangladesh -- Australia remains the only team against
whom he hasn't scored a double hundred.
