2019 Guatemalan General Election Sunday June 16,2019

The 2019 Guatemalan General Election is scheduled to take place on Sunday June 16,2019 to elect the President and the 160 Members of the Parliament

Incumbent President Jimmy Morales is constitutionally prohibited from running for a second four-year term

19 people were competing to succeed President Jimmy Morales. Two candidates who were tipped as favourites have been barred from running

Thelma Aldana, the former attorney-general, and Zury Ríos, the daughter of the late military ruler Efraín Ríos Montt, have been barred from running for the presidency. Another candidate was arrested in Miami on suspicion of conspiring to import cocaine to the US.

The 160 members of Congress are elected by two methods; 130 are elected from 22 multi-member constituencies based on the departments, with the remaining 31 elected from a single nationwide constituency

About 7.6 million Guatemalans are registered to vote for president, vice president, the entire 160-seat Congress, and 340 mayors.

Just as corruption dominated the 2015 electoral season that coincided with the resignation and imprisonment of former President Otto Pérez Molina, corruption is once again a major topic for voters in 2019
