More than 1.43 crore electors will exercise their franchise on May 12, Sunday, as the national capital goes to polls to elect representatives to its seven Lok Sabha seats, Delhi’s chief electoral officer (CEO) Ranbir Singh said.
Elaborate arrangements have been made for the conduct of elections across 2,700 polling locations housing 13,819 polling booths. Of these, 17 are ‘pink poll booths’ to be manned only by women while one in South Delhi’s Madangir will be manned by persons with disabilities (PwD) , Singh said
“We have made arrangements for free and fair elections. Around 1, 44,270 staff will be on duty across all polling locations. For security, 47 companies of paramilitary forces comprising around 77,000 personnel will be deployed across the city. This is in addition to the around 60,000 police personnel, who will be on duty,” the Delhi CEO said.
The state election office has identified 523 ‘critical’ polling locations where vigil will be stepped up and security will be heightened
New Delhi constituency, which has most VIPs coming to cast their votes, has the highest number of critical polling locations identified at 120, followed by 100 in South Delhi, 80 in North East, 67 in Chandni Chowk, 62 in East, 50 in West and 44 in North West, officials said
“We are exercising all precautions to ensure even the smallest aggravating factors. Security will be stepped up in these places. The locations have been identified by the micro observers along with Delhi Police based on the intensity of the political contest,” said Singh
A total of 25,146 electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used along with 13819 voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPATs), which allows electors to double-check their vote
“Two ballot units will be used in each constituency except for East Delhi, where only one unit will be used, as it has only 11 candidates,” the CEO said.
Of the total 1.43 crore voters, 78,73,022 are male and 64,42,762 are female while 699 are third gender voters.The number of overseas electors stands at 40 while count of service voters is 11,005
On Sunday, voting will begin from 7 am and will continue till 6pm
