US President Donald Trump delivered his second State of the Union address on Tuesday night Feb 05,2019 , and the House chamber looked quite a bit different this time around.
Now
the Democrats have the House majority, and it was Nancy Pelosi — not
Paul Ryan — sitting behind Trump with Vice President Mike Pence. The 116th Congress is also the most diverse Congress in history, with a record number of women.
Because of the record-long government shutdown, Donald Trump's speech came a week later than originally planned. It started with a call for bipartisanship.
"We
must reject the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution — and
embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise and the
common good," Trump said.
But it didn't take long for Trump's irritation at Democrats to rise to the surface.
"An
economic miracle is taking place in the United States — and the only
thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan
investigations," the President said. "If there is going to be peace and
legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just doesn't
work that way."
