Jallikkattu, a traditional bull taming sport in the state, is conducted during the Pongal festival.
However, the sport had faced a ban after protests by the Animal Welfare Board of India and animal rights organisation Peta.

However, following widespread protests in the state in 2016, the Tamil Nadu government passed an ordinance, which, with Centre’s approval, allowed it to resume since 2017

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami flagged off the season's biggest jallikattu that is eyeing for an entry into the Guinness World Records at Viralimalai in Pudukottai district on Sunday Jan 20.2019

The event, held in an open ground at Ammankulam in the presence of adjudicators Melanie and Mark from the World Records Union, United Kingdom, is drawing a large number of visitors from early morning

Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar, representing the Viralimalai Assembly constituency, is the main driving force behind the event and the attempt for a world record. Around 1,000 bulls from various districts would be released through the Vaadivaasal during the course of the event. About 700 bull tamers are taking part in the jallikattu that is being watched by State Ministers, MLAs and a large number of party functionaries.

Veterinary and medical teams have been deployed at the venue to examine the bulls and the tamers respectively.

The event commenced after a few temple bulls were released through the Vaadivaasal. A host of prizes, including cars, motorcycles and gold coins, are to be given to the best tamers and bulls.

The organisers had erected multiple-tier metal galleries on either side of the arena to accommodate a large number of spectators and metal barricades were put up on both sides to prevent onlookers from entering the arena.
