2019 India Tour of New Zealand Fourth ODI @ Hamiilton Thursday Jan 31,2019 - Captain Rohit Sharma's special 200

Rohit Sharma set to play his 200th ODI for India

The fourth ODI between New Zealand and India in Hamilton will mark a special '200' for a man who's often the synonym for double hundreds in ODI cricket.

In Virat Kohli's absence, Rohit Sharma will lead India in what will be his 200th ODI in Indian colours.

Rohit Sharma  will become the 79th player to reach the milestone and among them, only two players had scored more runs at the same point in their career than Rohit's tally of 7799 runs.

Virat Kohli had 8767 runs after 199 ODIs and AB de Villiers 8520; Hashim Amla has 7896 runs from 173 ODIs.

Having made his debut in a low-key series in Belfast in mid 2007, his career was in tatters a good six years since his debut.

The weight of being labelled "talented" brought undue pressure post every failure and after 86 ODIs he averaged a touch above 30 at a middling strike rate of 77 with just two hundreds.

It was when then skipper MS Dhoni moved him to the top of the order following the exit of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in early 2013, and it proved to be the single biggest turning point in his career. In 113 ODIs since, his averaged doubled to 60 and he is currently one of the best players going around in the 50-overs format.

A career of two halves
Period Mat Inngs Runs Avg SR 100s/50s HS
Debut - Dec 2012 86 81 1978 30.43 77.94 2/12 114
Jan 2013 onwards 113 112 5821 60.01 92.94 20/27 264

Ever since he started opening the batting, he has averaged upwards of 50 in each of the six calendar years. Only one player has averaged 50-plus in more years in succession - AB de Villiers for seven consecutive years from 2009 to 2015. Interestingly, Rohit made the highest individual score for India in each of these calendar years.

The Daddy of 'Daddy' hundreds

145 The average size of a Rohit Sharma hundred. It's the highest average score for a player in innings where he's reached three figures (min: five hundreds). Out of his 22 ODI centuries, seven have been scores in excess of 150 including three double centuries - both conveniently the most by any player in ODI history. He also holds the record for the highest individual score in ODI cricket - 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014.

The 'Hitman'
16 Sixes hit by Rohit in his knock of 209 against Australia in Bengaluru in 2013 - the first player to hit as many sixes in an innings in ODI cricket. The record was subsequently equalled by AB de Villiers (vs WI, SCG) and Chris Gayle (vs Zim, Canberra) in 2015.

42 Boundaries scored by Rohit in his world record knock of 264 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata - 33 fours and nine sixes. It is the most boundaries scored in an ODI innings by a player, 20% more than the next best of 35 by Martin Guptill (237* vs WI) in Auckland in 2015.

66 Sixes hit by Rohit against Australia in ODIs - the most by a player against an opponent in ODI cricket. Australia have been his favourite opponents as well, he having scored 1778 runs against them at an average of 65.85 with seven hundreds.

215 Sixes for Rohit in ODIs - the joint most for an Indian player alongside MS Dhoni. Rohit has taken 183 innings to hit 215 maximums compared to 259 innings for Dhoni. He also holds the Indian record for most sixes in a calendar year in ODIs - 46 sixes in 2017. Only AB de Villiers (58 in 2015) and Shahid Afridi (48 in 2002) have hit more maximums in a calendar year in ODIs.
