Shikhar Dhawan Joins Elite Club of Centurions Before Lunch on Day 1

Shikhar Dhawan joined a select band of players to score a century before lunch on Day 1 of a Test.

Shikhar Dhawan's 87-ball century was the first by an Indian batsman in the first session of a Test as he became the sixth batsman overall to do so in the history of the longest format.

Before Dhawan today, Virender Sehwag became close to becoming the first Indian to score scoring a hundred before lunch when he blasted 99 off 75 on the first day of the 2nd Test against West Indies at St Lucia in June 2006.

India opted to bat first as Afghanistan got a taste of Test cricket and the hosts they gave them a reality check, sprinting to 158/0 in 27 overs when the lunch break was taken.

With this, Dhawan also joined an elite list consisting of Australia's Victor Trumper , Charlie Macartney and Don Bradman. Pakistan's Majid Khan and David Warner are the other two players in the elite list.

Shikhar Dhawan started aggressively from the word go, taking the attack to an inexperienced Afghanistan attack even as Murali Vijay struggled to get going.

He was particularly brutal on Afghanistan spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, using his feet against them and finding boundaries at will. Rashid had figures 0/59 after his 8 overs, meanwhile Mujeeb's figures read 0/32 after 4 overs, with Dhawan doing the maximum damage. He scored 19 boundaries and cleared the rope thrice.

It was Dhawan's seventh century overall as he gave India a blistering start against Afghanistan in the one-off Test.

He became the first Indian to score a hundred before Lunch on the first day of a test match and the second Indian after Hardik Pandya to score a hundred before lunch on other days. Pandya scored 108 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2017.

Shikhar Dhawan was finally dismissed for 107 off just 96 balls by Yamin Ahmadzai

Day Two Friday June 15,2018

India beat Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs

Scorecard
India 474
Afghanistan 109 and 103
Match Result - India won by an innings and 262 Runs

India beat Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs on Friday to register its first-ever two-day win and the biggest innings victory in Test cricket. It was also the first time an Asian team managed to win a Test inside two days.

Batting against the world-class Indian bowling lineup was always going to be Afghanistan's biggest challenge but there was hardly any competition between bat and ball on Day 2 as India bowled out the Test debutants twice in two sessions in Bengaluru.

Following on in the second innings, Afghanistan were skittled out for 103 runs in 38.4 overs in the third session with Ravindra Jadeja (4/17) and Umesh Yadav (3/26) being the star performers in the third innings while Ishant Sharma picked up two wickets.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai (25) and Hashmitullah Shahidi (36 not out) were the only two batsmen who managed to score more than 20 runs for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan were earlier bowled out for 109 in their first innings and trailed by 365 runs in the second session as Ajinkya Rahane decided to enforce follow-on.

A good bowling effort from star off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Jadeja and Ishant helped India bowl out Afghanistan in just 27.5 overs, the lowest total at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here.
It was also the least number of overs that a team has batted an innings of their inaugural Test.

Ashwin scalped 4 wickets for 27 runs while Jadeja and Ishant picked up two wickets each to dismiss the visitors inside a session. For Afghanistan, Mohammad Nabi (24) was the highest scorer.

It all started with Hardik Pandya, when the 24-year-old displayed brilliant fielding to get rid of opener Mohammad Shahzad (14) in the fourth over. Ishant and Umesh then came in the picture when the duo picked up a couple of peaches.

Ishant clean bowled Javed Ahmadi (1) in the very next over and after three overs, Umesh dismissed Rahmat Shah (14) to make it 35/3 in 8.2 overs.

Wicketkeeper batsman Afsar Zazai (6) was also dismissed in the next over by Ishant.

Skipper Asghar Stanikzai (11) then came in the middle and it seemed that the regular fall of wickets will stop but Indian spinners -- Jadeja and Ashwin-- had some other plans
.
Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi (24), Rashid Khan (7), Yamin Ahmadzai (0) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (15) were packed up by the spinning duo in no time. The spin twins bagged six wickets between them to bring Afghanistan's downfall.

Nabi was the only batsman to show some application and composure, while the rest surrendered meekly to the quality of the Indian attack.

Earlier, India folded up for a substantial 474 in their first innings after Afghanistan cleaned up the remaining four wickets at the stroke of lunch.

India managed to add 127 runs to their overnight total of 347/6, thanks to a brilliant half century from all-rounder Pandya (71) coupled with some cameos from the tailenders.
