Commonwealth Games

The event was first held in 1930, and has taken place every four years since then (with the exception of 1942 and 1946, which were cancelled due to WW II

The games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation(CGF)



9 nations have hosted the Commonwealth Games.

18 cities in seven countries have hosted the event.

Two cities have hosted Commonwealth Games more than once - Auckland,NZ(1950 & 1990) and Edinburgh,Scotland(1970 & 1986)

Australia  has hosted four Commonwealth Games (1938,1962,1982,2006)and will host for the fifth time in 2018

Canada has hosted four Commonwealth Games (1930,1954,1978,1994)

Only 6 countries have attended every Commonwealth Games Australia,Canada,NZ,England,Scotland and Wales

COMMONWEALTH GAMES HISTORY
1. First contested in 1930 as The Empire Games (a title that lasted until in 1950) in Hamilton, Ontario. Just 400 athletes from 11 countries attended.
2. Contested every four years, except for 1942 and 1946 due to World War Two, until 1950. Was renamed as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1952 with the 1954 event in Vancouver the first to use the title.
3. The last BE&C Games were held in Kingston in 1966, the first time they had been held outside of Britain, Australia, Canada or New Zealand.
4. Renamed the Commonwealth Games for the 1978 Edmonton event.
5.  Kuala Lumpur becomes the first Asian city to host the Games in 1998
