Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, better known as Sridevi, was born in 1963 in Sivakasi in what was then Madras State

By the time she was a teenager, she was already a film veteran, transitioning to the Hindi film industry in 1979.

In the mid-1980s, Sridevi was a bona fide superstar.

Over the next decade, she cemented her position, alongside Madhuri Dixit, as Hindi cinema's most bankable heroine, marrying her commercial success to critical acclaim.

 Inevitably, her performance in English Vinglish, her 2012 comeback film, after an eight-year absence, was hailed as among the best that year.

Her untimely death in Dubai last week meant she would not see her daughter follow in her footsteps.
