Elphinstone Bridge: The tragedy and how Mumbaikars demanded and got a new bridge

In September 2017, overcrowding on the foot-over bridge connecting Elphinstone Road and Parel stations in Mumbai caused a stampede in which several innocent commuters died.

What angered Mumbaikars was the fact that many earlier requests to augment the capacity of the foot-over bridge, and warnings of a stampede during peak hours in Mumbai's local train crush, were ignored.
