On This Day On 4th December 2009 Virender Sehwag Almost Achieves the Impossible

Virender Sehwag almost scripted history and nearly became the first batsman to score three triple hundreds in Test matches.

After triple tons against Pakistan and South Africa, Sehwag was at his rampaging best against Sri Lanka and scored 284 runs in one day against Muralitharan and co. in Mumbai

However, next day he could add only 9 more runs the next day and was dismissed on 293 off 254 balls. This included 40 fours and 7 sixes.

Sehwag also became the third fastest Indian to 6000 Test runs during this incredible innings.

Had he scored the triple ton, he would have become the first batsman to score three triple tons, but even now he along with Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle, remain the only player who have achieved this feat.

The innings helped India register a comfortable victory as well, batting first Sri Lanka had scored 393 but Sehwag led the Indian reply as they posted 726/9, with a ton from Dhoni and solid contributions from Vijay, Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman.

Sangakkara scored a fine ton for Sri Lanka in the second innings, but they still went onto lose the match by an innings and 24 runs.
