A T20 victory by 93 runs tells its own story. En route KL Rahul, Manish Pandey and, to an extent, Jaydev Unadkat made a point about their India future. But perhaps the biggest bonus was the manner in which MS Dhoni showed why he is still indispensable to this team

M S Dhoni ended India’s innings with a six after adding 68 in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Pandey

KL Rahul got to his second T20 International half-century, making the most of a rare opportunity cauzed by Shikhar Dhawan’s absence for the Indian cricket team from this series against Sri Lanka.

KL Rahul  got to the landmark off 34 balls with six fours and a six.

The only time he looked in trouble on a wicket where the bounce didn’t look true but the dew seemed to be a factor from early in the evening was when Angelo Mathews rapped him on the pads with the first ball of the seventh over. The review judged that the ball would have missed leg-stump. Rahul was on 23 then.

On either side of that Rahul made the most of the Sri Lankan cricket team attack that looked ordinary barring Akila Dananjaya and Mathews.

With Rohit Sharma, he added 38 before Mathews got the India skipper with one that hit him high on the bat and at Dushmantha Chameera took a good catch at mind-on standing on the rim and diving in front.

Rahul went over the top on the off-side when Chameera gave him the latitude and wasn’t afraid to pull when Thisara Perera dropped it short. Rahul gave Mathews the same treatment when he tried some chin music and this time it went for six, taking him to 43 off 29 balls and India to 74/1 after 8.5 overs

Earlier, he had helped himself to an easy boundary when Dananjaya bowled a full toss on the leg-side.

Rahul’s strike rate of 149 is the highest among all the players here on Wednesday night and without really trying too hard, he did his reputation no harm on Wednesday night. Rahul, however, was bowled by Thisara Perera when he tried to slog a slower ball, but misread the delivery.
