Mercedes-Benz Stadium becomes first professional sports stadium in the world

Mercedes-Benz Stadium becomes first professional sports stadium in the world to achieve LEED Platinum Certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is created by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and it is the most widely used green building rating system.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium obtained more points than any other sports facility in the world with 88 total points. The two-million square foot stadium was opened in August 2017.

This new world-class sports venue is renowned for its bold design and eye-catching features.

From day one of its building construction, the stadium’s unique sustainability solutions for water, lighting and energy conservation, as well as community programs and stewardship, have been a key part of the stadium’s innovation story.

Key features of the stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium obtained LEED score of 88 total points. This is the highest score ever for a sports venue

It is the first sports stadium to receive all water category credits, due in large part to a highly-advanced storm water management system.

Due to water-efficient fixtures and conservation infrastructure, Mercedes-Benz Stadium uses 47 per cent less water than baseline (EPAct 1992) standard

With the renewable energy generated through its 4,000 solar PV panels, the stadium can power nine Atlanta Falcons games or 13 Atlanta United matches

Mercedes-Benz stadium features LED lighting that will last 10 times longer than standard lights and reduce energy usage by as much as 60 %

Mercedes-Benz stadium has alternative transportation options including a bike valet program during event days; EV charging stations with capacity to charge up to 48 electric cars and new pedestrian-friendly walking ways that will allow for more connectivity between communities

There is 13-acre greenspace under development adjacent to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will offer game-day parking and tailgating. The greenspace will also allow arts and cultural events on non-event days.
