Twitter has said that it had overstated its monthly user numbers since 2014, according to a report by The New York Times.
The San Francisco based-company said that the error happened after it mistakenly included data from third-party applications in its counting.
Twitter said that it had discovered monthly user numbers had wrongly included numbers from third-party applications that used a software-development program Digits.
Digits would allow third-party applications to send authentication messages through Twitter’s systems. The activity did not reflect on the Twitter.
Google's parent company, Alphabet, had bought Digits from Twitter, earlier this year.
The company said that it had now lowered the monthly user number by two million for the first and second quarters of 2017 and by one million for the fourth quarter of 2016.
The company also revealed that its net loss had narrowed in the third quarter and the number of daily active users had risen 14 percent.
The revelation comes at a time when the company's reputation has taken a beating by scrutiny over its role in Russia’s alleged attempts at meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election.
Twitter has also been criticised for not taking enough efforts to stop abuse and harassment on the platform. Some investors have also raised concerns about the platform's slowing user growth
