Ghana’s communications regulator okays Airtel-Tigo merger Tuesday Oct 03,2017

Bharti Airtel on Tuesday Oct 03,2017 said that Ghana’s communications regulator has approved the merger of its subsidiary Bharti Ghana with Millicom Ghana (Tigo), subject to certain conditions.

This merger will result in an entity, which will be the second largest mobile network operations in Ghana, Airtel said. The merger was announced in March this year.
It required the regulator to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the application and the regulatory ecosystem, the company said.
“The merger approval is also conditioned with an option for Government participation,” Airtel said, adding that the merged entity will have a 3G licence valid until January 2024 while their 2G licence will be valid until October 2021.
The merged company would have to submit a ‘network integration plan’ outlining how they intend to relinquish, in phases, portion of their total spectrum allocation. The move is aimed at ensuring an equitable distribution and access to radiowaves.
