India’s Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Peng Shuai failed to qualify to the finals of the women’s double event at US Open, losing to Martina Hingis and Yung-Jan Chan in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Both sides traded breaks in the first set, before Hingis and Chan managed to win a crucial 9th game before serving it out for 6-4. The second set was tightly contested, with each duo offered up multiple chances to break and each managing to firm hold.
Hingis faced pressure on her serve in the 8th game, unable to tackle some deft net play by Peng and cross-court winners from Mirza. They stayed strong to hold and came out blazing in the next game, breaking Mirza and Peng. winning the set 6-4.
Hingis and Chan will now meet the winner of Lucie Safarova-Barbora Styroca and Lucie Hradecka-Katerina Siniakova in the final of the women’s double event. Mirza and Peng, seeded fourth, are playing their first Grand Slam together. Speaking about the future of the partnership, Mirza said “We will continue to play together till the end of the year.”
