Kerala's Mathrubhumi Group Announces a Day Off for Women on Periods

After a Mumbai-based digital media company announced a paid first day off for women during their periods, a media organisation based out Kerala, has also announced the same.

Mathrubhumi, a major media group, on Monday July 17,2017 said that at this stage, it is being offered to employees of Mathrubhumi Television channel, "keeping in mind their long working hours which often get stretched."

On Wednesday July 19,2017, at around 1:30 PM, Joint Managing Director of the Mathrubhumi Group, M V Sreyamskumar, notified his employees via a video conference that female employees can take an off on the first day of menstrual cycle.

He further informed that at this stage, the benefit is extended to the TV employees since "the stress level of the television journalists is higher."

Taking into account the fact that "they (TV journalists) have to come in different shifts, including early morning and late night", Sreyamskumar said that "understanding the problems they face during their periods, we have taken this decision."

The Mumbai-based firm has inspired us, Sreyamskumar said. Questioning people who say "women need help and support", he said, "What women really want is for people to understand them."

"They can either take this off on the first day or whenever they deem fit for themselves as different women face problems on different days," he said, adding that it wasn't any kind of "concession" to women.

The female employees at Mathrubhumi are buoyed by the group's decision. "There are days when we are down with our periods, we call the office, and request for a change in our shifts," a female employee said, adding that the company's move was a "historic" one.
