UIDAI has now introduced a new smartphone app called mAadhaar to help registered users to carry their Aadhaar profile with them on their smartphones, thus, negating the need to carry the original card physically.
The mAadhaar app is only available for Android devices and could be rolled out to iPhones later.
Aadhaar number holders can access information like Name, Date of Birth, Gender and Address along with photograph as linked with their Aadhaar number through the app
How to access it?
Only those Aadhaar card holders who have registered their mobile number with UIDAI can use the app. If you are registering your mobile number in your Aadhaar card for the first time then you need to visit your nearest Aadhaar Centre as it cannot be done online
Why is it important?
One obvious question is that how is the mAadhaar app different from having a picture of the Aadhaar card saved on your smartphone? Well, the photograph is not verified while the Aadhaar profile on the app is official and can be used for eKYC verification. Also, the moment you update any personal details on your Aadhaar profile, the same will be visible on the app.
What can it do?
The mAadhaar app offers biometric locking and can be used to secure authentication by locking biometrics data. “Once resident enables Biometric Locking system their biometric remains locked till the Aadhaar Holder chose to either Unlock it (which is temporary) or Disable the Locking system,” according to description provided on Google Play.
The app can also be used to get OTPs instead of getting them via SMS. The QR code can be used share data instead of manually entering it during eKYC
