Sri Lanka Vs India Galle First Test Match July 26-30,2017 -  Preview

The Galle International Stadium has not been a happy ground for India.
They have often made all the wrong headlines here - they were at the receiving end of Muttiah Muralitharan's tryst with destiny when he claimed his 800th Test wicket here, almost exactly seven years ago.
Then, in 2015, the new-look Team India, with Virat Kohli at the helm, collapsed for just 112 runs on Day 4 while chasing a 176-run target. A certain Rangana Herath took seven wickets that time around. Now, he will be leading Sri Lanka, at least for the Galle Test.
But then things changed. India came back from behind to win the next two Tests, both played at Colombo, by 278 runs and 117 runs respectively, to begin a streak of series wins for Kohli and his side, which is unabated since.
India have in fact won only one Test at Galle, in 2008 under the captaincy of Anil Kumble, before losing three consecutive matches.
So you could look at Galle with a little apprehension, or with anticipation.
Maybe India will set their record here straight this time around.
Combining the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, India have lost only one out of 23 Tests (against Australia at Pune) since that defeat in Galle.

A batting paradise, a pedestrian bowling attack and one of the most picturesque stadiums in the world. Shikhar Dhawan couldn’t have asked for a better setting to make a return to Test cricket. Dropped after the home series against New Zealand in October 2016, it required Murali Vijay to suffer a wrist injury for Dhawan to get picked for the series against Sri Lanka. And on Wednesday he showed why he is one of the most destructive batsman in world cricket on his day as India ended the opening day on 399/3 at the Galle International Stadium, thanks largely to Dhawan’s blistering knock of 190.

Sri Lanka’s mediocre bowling attack and Asela Gunaratne gifting Dhawan a life on 31 can take nothing away from his scintillating knock. He cut, he pulled, he drove and he flicked with equal elan. More importantly, he picked the singles whenever the Sri Lankan bowlers bowled a decent delivery to ensure that the hosts could never really pile the pressure. With Cheteshwar Pujara (144*) providing the solidarity from one end, it almost looked like Dhawan had the license to kill as the two put on 253 for the second wicket after Abhinav Mukund once again failed to grab the opportunity at the top, managing just 12 on a wicket which offered nothing to the bowlers.

At stumps, it was Ajinkya Rahane (39) giving Pujara company with Nuwan Pradeep returning with the best figures for Sri Lanka (3/64). India’s run-rate did dip once Pradeep sent back Dhawan and Virat Kohli (3) on either side of the tea break, but with Pujara looking to camp at the crease, there was no way that India would lose the advantage grabbed in the first two sessions by Dhawan.

In fact, Dhawan beat India’s most prolific opener Virender Sehwag on Wednesday as he hit 111 runs in the post lunch session. Sehwag had managed to score 108 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008 and 109 against Pakistan in Lahore in 2006. Interestingly, the record for most runs for India in the second session belonged to Polly Umrigar for scoring 110 runs against West Indies at the Port of Spain in 1962.

The beauty of Dhawan’s innings on Wednesday had to be the ease with which he moved in the crease. While he was decisive with his footwork against the pacers, he was quick to jump down the track every time the spinners came on to bowl.

In fact, Dhawan’s footwork had the precision of a surgeon and even the experienced Sri Lanka stand-in skipper Rangana Herath couldn’t stop the flow of runs as Dhawan would first step down the track and hit Herath on the full and then hold back and wait for the left-arm spinner to pitch it short so that he could bring out the cut. Herath ended the day with an economy rate of 3.83, after going over 4 in the first two sessions of the day.

Pujara on the other hand look unperturbed as he went about his job, picking the singles and doubles and pouncing on the bad deliveries. In fact, even though he looked like a slow coach in front of the swashbuckling Dhawan, Pujara hit his 16th fifty of his career off 80 balls.

Such was Dhawan’s domination that the Lankans would rue Gunaratne dropping him at second slip when the left-hander edged Lahira Kumara trying to drive the pacer on the up. Not only did Gunaratne drop the sitter, he also ended up fracturing his left thumb and will no longer take part in the Galle Test.

There were just two phases in the whole day when the Lankans held the edge but failed to grab the opportunity. While the first one came when Dhawan was dropped, the second came after Kohli was dimissed by Pradeep as Dickwella completed a good catch down the leg side.

While the umpire had initially given it not out, Herath went for a review and replays showed a clear knick as the ball landed in Dickwella’s gloves. With Rahane known to be a shaky starter, it was the perfect chance for Herath’s boys to get back into the game. But they failed to do that and let the moment slip and the end result was Rahane settling down to play perfect fiddle to Pujara who looks set to trouble the Lankan bowlers again when the umpires call play on the second morning

Day One Highlights

ShikharDhawan’s brilliant 168-ball knock comprising 31 fours saw several records fall. Here is a list of records eclipsed.
190 - Shikhar Dhawan’s highest individual score in Test cricket. His previous highest was 187, scored on debut against Australia in Mohali in 2013. This is his third 150-plus score in Tests.

126 - Number of runs scored by Shikhar Dhawan in the session between lunch and tea. This is the fourth highest number of runs scored by any batsman in the second session of play. England batsman Denis Compton tops the list with 173 runs in one session against Pakistan in 1954 at Old Trafford, Manchester. That is followed by 150 by England’s Wally Hammond against New Zealand in Auckland in 1932/33. Australia’s Stan McCabe smashed 127 runs, against England in Trent Bridge in 1938
2 - Dhawan’s 126 runs in a session is the second most by an Indian batsman in Tests. Virender Sehwag smashed 133 in a session during the 2009 Test against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne stadium, Mumbai, in an innings where he blasted 293 runs.

3 - Shikhar Dhawan’s 190 is the third-highest individual score by an Indian in Tests in Sri Lanka. Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 203 at the SSC ground, Colombo in 2010 followed by Sehwag’s 201 in Galle in 2008.

5 - Shikhar Dhawan has the joint fifth-highest individual score by a visiting batsmen in Tests at Galle.
Chris Gayle’s 333 is on top while Sehwag and Mushfiqur Rahim are the other batsmen to hit double centuries at this seaside venue.
Dhawan’s 190 equals the individual Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Ashraful’s knock in 2013.
