Yellow Nails - Know the common causes for it


Here are a few causes of yellow nails which we all should be aware of:

Fungal infections

One of the most common result of a fungal infection is yellow nails as our hands and feet often come into contact with all kinds of potentially infectious bacteria. And your toes in particular are exposed to moist, warm temperatures where fungus can fester.

Smoking

Smoking can also lead to yellow fingernails because of the close exposure to the toxins in the smoke which lead to discoloration in the nails.

Liver disease

If your nails are yellow in colour, then you might be suffering from jaundice. Jaundice is a condition that causes a light yellowish tinge or pigmentation of the skin due to high levels of bilirubin in the body.

Kidney disease

High level of excess of bilirubin in the blood could also be caused due to an underlying kidney disease, which causes yellow fingernails. One should consult your doctor if they have yellow nail to know the exact cause and treat it.

Pleural effusion

A lung disease, even pleural effusion might lead to yellow nails. It is a condition in which excess fluid gets accumulated in the lungs, which can lead to yellowing of nails, which a subtle sign of this condition.

Dark nail paint

Applying dark nail paint quite often and not letting the nails breathe might also lead to yellowing of the nails. It is because the dyes present in the nail paints stain the nails yellow
