General Motors to shut Halol facility on Friday April 28,2017

After nearly two years of announcing closure of its Halol facility near Vadodara, Gujarat the American automobile giant General Motors will down its shutters at one of its oldest facilities in India on Friday April 28,2017
The company had announced its plans to consolidate production at its facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra.
It has not been a smooth closure for the company as a stand-off between workers and management over the remuneration for the voluntary separation scheme (VSS) and transfers to the new location hampered the process. At least 600 workers have demanded higher compensation package under the VSS scheme, union leaders claimed.
“We will support our employees at the Halol plant throughout this transition," GM India President and Managing Director Kaher Kazem had stated in March this year. “We have in place the options of a significantly enhanced separation package or continuity of employment at our Talegaon plant." However, in spite of the efforts by the company, the stand-off continues till the last day of the plant operation. Meanwhile, the company has already transferred about 350 workers to its Talegaon facility.
At Halol, GM had suspended Cruze (sedan) production some time ago, while it will stop Tavera (utility vehicle) production on Friday April 28,2017
