Dozens of Spanish prisoners flew home from Peru on Thursday March 16,2017 , in a move that will allow the inmates to serve the rest of their prison sentences closer to their families.
The agreement under which they will leave was brokered between the two countries and billed as a humanitarian gesture that will allow prisoners to better re-integrate society after completing their sentences.
Peru is the world's second-largest cocaine producer, and many of the narcotics arriving in Europe pass through Spain, where traffickers offer "drug mules" a hefty sum to travel to Lima and smuggle back cocaine.
There are currently more than 200 Spaniards in Peruvian prisons on drug charges, more inmates than from any other foreign country
