2017 Goa Assembly Elections - Polling will be held on Saturday Feb 04,2017 to elect the 40-member Punjab Assembly in a three-cornered contes

After an acrimonious campaign, Goa is all set for the Assembly polls on Saturday which will witness a contest among ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Opposition Congress, new entrant Aam Aadmi Party and the three-party alliance forged by MGP, GSM and Shiv Sena.
Goa is set for its polls on Saturday as 11,10,884 voters will pick the final 40 from the 251 candidates in the fray

Voting across 1,642 polling booths in the state would begin at 7 AM and culminate at 5 PM.

The fate of five former chief ministers and present Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar will be decided in the election which is being contested by 250 candidates -- 131 in South Goa and 119 in North Goa. The counting of votes will be held on March 11.
BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and MGP and its allies are the major contenders this time.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led party, which has for the first time forayed into Goa, is contesting on 39 seats. Congress is contesting on 38 seats and BJP on 37.
BJP, which had pre-poll alliance during the 2012 Assembly polls, is going alone this time but is supporting independents in four constituencies.

The BJP manifesto for the Goa polls linked two of the party’s major poll pitches — job creation and development — as it promised employment opportunities in the MOPA airport project

The Election Commission of India (ECI) directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Goa to file a criminal case against Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly promoting bribery in his speech made in the state on January 8. The poll panel had censured Kejriwal a week ago for exhorting voters to accept bribe from BJP and Congress candidates, but vote for AAP. In its January 20 order, the poll panel had also threatened to withdraw AAP’s recognition under Para 16A of Symbols Order, if he continues violating the Model Code of Conduct with impunity.

Christians constitute about 26 per cent of the state’s electorate – a significant vote bank, specially in the south, where constituencies such as Cuncolim and Benaulim are predominantly Christian.

Before every election, the Church issues a statement that, in a way, suggests what one should keep in mind before casting their vote.

In the 2012 election, many were of the view that the Church had spoken tough on corruption – a veiled attack on the Congress Party.

This time, it appears to be voicing its concern over the controversial policies of the BJP government – both at the Centre and at the state level.

Goa, where elections are being held today for the union territory's 40-member assembly, will see the fates of 251 candidates decided by some 11 lakh voters. From Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar of the BJP, to Elvis Gomes, the Aam Aadmi Party's chief ministerial candidate, and Digambar Kamat, former Goa Chief Minister who is contesting on a Congress ticket, the election will see several heavyweights jostling for voters' mandate. The results for the elections will be declared on March 11 along with four other states where polls will be held over the next two months.
