After more than a decade of reigning supreme as the world's biggest luxury car brand, BMW has been knocked off its perch by its long-time rival Mercedes.
In 2016, Mercedes-Benz delivered the most luxury vehicles of any manufacturer, boasting some 2.1million sales worldwide.
The motoring rivals have long been embroiled in a sales war, with BMW coming up trumps every year since 2005.
But Mercedes sold 2,083,888 models last year, outstripping BMW's 2,003,359 sales figures.
The Mercedes sales figures mark a growth of 11.3 percent compared with 2015.
At the company's 125th anniversary in 2011 - a year when Audi sales overtook those of Mercedes, pushing it into third place - Dieter Zetsche, Chief Executive of parent company Daimler, forecast his improvements would make Mercedes the best-selling luxury carmaker by 2020.
'Extraordinary growth, especially in China and Europe, has placed us at the top in the luxury segment,' Zetsche said following the release of the sales figures.
Mercedes had achieved its best year ever by sales for the sixth time in a row, he added.
