Tamilnadu Chief Minister O Paneerselvam on Friday Dec 23,2016 handed over a cheque for Rs 2 crore to Salem-based Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won a gold in high jump in the Paralympics held at Rio de Janeiro in August last.
It may be noted that former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had increased the incentives for Tamilnadu athletes performing well and winning medals in international competitions.
It may be noted that Jayalalithaa had announced an award of Rs 2 crore for Mariyappan Thangavelu, who won the gold medal in T-42 highjump at the Rio Paralympics.
'‘By leaping over a height of 1.89 metres, you have leapt into history and done both the Nation and the State of Tamilnadu proud. Your achievement, overcoming several obstacles and hurdles, will inspire more and more children and youth to overcome adversities and to participate and strive for greater achievements,’' she had said in a statement then.
