Avery Jackson(09)transgender girl made history by appearing on the cover of National Geographic

A brave nine-year-old transgender girl who appeared on the cover of National Geographic has been targeted by trolls, some of whom have called for her parents to be 'exterminated'.

Avery Jackson, from Kansas, was born a boy, but announced to her mother Debi that she was a girl at the age of four.

The nine-year-old made history this month when she became the first transgender person to appear on the prestigious magazine's front-page.

The edition of the magazine that Avery is on the cover of is dedicated to exploring 'the shifting landscape of gender'.

National Geographic's Gender Revolution issue, which is out on December 27, explores different aspects of gender identity through various stories - including Avery's.

The magazine's editor in chief Susan Goldberg tweeted: 'So proud of our @NatGeo Jan issue. 100% devoted to exploring gender. We're grateful to all who let us into their lives. #GenderRevolution.'
