5 Big Sporting Disasters Due to Plane Crash
1)Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Air Disaster 2011
Disaster struck on September 7, when a flight carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team, crashed near the Russian city of Yaroslavl.
The aircraft stuck the tower mast after taking off from the runway and crashed near the Volga River Bank.
43 out of 45 passengers, including the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl professional ice hockey team died on the spot. One passenger passed away five days later in the hospital.
2)Zambian National Football Team 1993
The Military flight carrying the Zambian national football team, who were on their way to 1994 World Cup qualification match in Senegal, crashed on April 27, 1993.
All 30 passengers and crew, including 18 players, as well as the national team coach lost their lives in the accident.
There was an engine problem noted during the plane's first stop in Congo, but the flight continued and a few minutes after taking off from the scheduled second stop in Gabon, one of the engines caught fire and failed.
3)US Amateur Boxing Team 1980
A mechanical failure caused the Polish Airlines Flight to crash in Warsaw that saw 87 people on board lose their lives.
On board were members of the 1980 US amateur boxing team, many of whom were contenders to qualify for the 1980 US Olympic Boxing Team.
The USA subsequently boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980.
4)University of Evansville Basketball Team 1977
A chartered plane carrying the Evansville Basketball Team crashed in rain and fog near the Evansville Regional Airport.
Every member of the team and coaching staff on the plane was killed at the crash site.
After investigation it was later revealed that the mishap took place due to pilot error who forgot to remove the rudder and right aileron control locks before takeoff.
5)Manchester United Football Team 1958
On 6 February, 1958, British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from the runway at Munich Airport in West Germany.
On board the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the “Busby Babes”, along with a number of supporters and journalists.
23 of the 44 people on board the aircraft died in the crash including some of the most talented young footballers in the world at that time.
