2016-17 England Tour of India - India Vs England Fourth Test @ Mumbai - Keaton Jennings became the 19th English batsman to score a ton on debut Thursday Dec 08,2016

Day One Thursday Dec 08,2016

Keaton Jennings, the left-hander came into the fourth Test against India with the visitors down 0-2 in the series, but showed no signs of nerves in his first match as he went on to score a strokeful century before being sent back by the wizard Ravichandran Ashwin.

His knock of 112 meant England made a positive start to the Test match with the bat.

Keaton Jennings became the 19th English batsman to score a ton on debut, emulating skipper Alastair Cook, who too scored his maiden Test ton on his debut against India in India.

Keaton Jennings  was born in Johannesburg and captained the South African under-19 team -- hit 12 fours during his century run.

Keaton Jennings became the latest South African-born English cricketer to score a ton on their international Test debut.

Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior both made centuries in their first outings while Jonathan Trott reached three figures in the second innings of his Test debut.

The stats behind Keaton Jennings' century on  test debut

  • Eighth England opener to make a century on Test debut, and the first since Alastair Cook in 2006
  • 19th England player to make a Test century on debut, and the first since Jonathan Trott in 2009
  • First England player since Billy Griffith in 1948 to make a century on the first day on Test debut
  • Four of the last five England batsmen to make centuries on debut have been born in South Africa. Jennings was preceded by Andrew Strauss, Matt Prior, Jonathan Trott and Gloucester-born Cook
  • Jennings is the 11th opening partner Cook has had since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012. Sunil Gavaska holds the record for most opening partners, with 19

Keaton Kent Jennings was born on June 19, 1992 in the South African city of Johannesburg to cricketer Ray Jennings, who played first-class cricket for Transvaal in the years of South Africa's isolation from international cricket due to apartheid.

He played domestic cricket in South Africa for the Gauteng province and even represented the South African U-19 team.

The youngster dreamt of becoming an international cricketer from his childhood and followed the path taken by several other South African cricketers like Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Nick Compton, who tried their luck in England.
