2016-17 England Tour of India - India Vs England Fourth Test @ Mumbai Friday Dec 09,2016 - Ravichandran Ashwin continues great run, completes 23rd five-wicket-haul in Tests

Day Two  Friday Dec 09,2016

Continuing from where he left off on Thursday evening, Ravichandran Ashwin took just 12 balls to strike the first blow against England on Day 2 and complete his five-wicket haul.

It was Ashwin’s 23rd five-wicket haul in only his 43rd Test

Ravichandran Ashwin is currently like an elephant on the charge, who is breaking past all barriers and creating a trail of his own.

The off-spinner picked up 6 wickets in the first innings of the 4th Test @Mumbai  against England and thus equalled Kapil Dev who has inspired an entire generation of cricketers in India.

What makes Ashwin's achievement worthy of a 'Wow' is that he has reached the mark in his 43rd Test itself. Kapil on the other hand picked up his last five-wicket haul in his 114th Test and eventually went on to call it a day after playing in 131 Test matches.

Ashwin's achievement also puts him in the same league as two other legendary pacemen who ruled the roost in the 70s and 80s respectively - Dennis Lillee and Imran Khan. Both these pacers ended their illustrious careers with 23 five-wicket hauls respectively, but they too didn't hit the mark as early as Ashwin has.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who is now seventh on the list of India’s leading wicket takers in Tests after he went past Javagal Srinath’s record of 236 wickets in Test, is now two wickets adrift of BS Chandrasekhar’s mark of 242

Ashwin has now picked up 65 wickets this year, which is the most he has ever picked in a calendar year. His previous best of 62 wickets came in 2015.

The Indian record for the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket though rests with current Indian coach Anil Kumble, who picked up a fifer 35 times
