Alastair
Cook is adamant Jimmy Anderson still has a leading role to play for
England in next year's Ashes and beyond even though injury has again
ruled him out of the final Test of this difficult tour.
The
England captain confirmed that his strike bowler will be missing with
shoulder and ankle soreness when his side somehow attempt to stop India
inflicting a fourth successive defeat on them.
It
is the latest blow for Anderson, who missed the start of England's
summer series against Pakistan with a stress fracture of his right
shoulder blade and then arrived late for this tour when the unusual
injury flared up again.
'Unfortunately
Jimmy picked up body soreness from the last game so he's not going to
be risked here,' said under-pressure captain Cook ahead of practice here
in Chennai.
'He
possibly could get through but it's just not worth playing him because
in the last six months when he has played in this type of situation he
has picked up niggles.'
The
worry is that injuries are beginning to catch up with England's record
wicket-taker, who had an exceptional fitness record until the last year
or so when he has suffered numerous setbacks.
