Olympic Games and Mascots

Olympic Mascot

1)The first Olympic mascot was born at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Grenoble,France
  It was named “Schuss” and it was a little man on skis, designed in an abstract form and painted in the colors of France: blue, red and white.

2)However, the first official Olympic mascot appeared in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich,Germany.



It was Waldi, a Dachshund dog, a popular breed in Bavaria and it represented the attributes required for athletes - resistance, tenacity and agility

3)1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal,Canada

Amik was the mascot
 
Amik was a beaver

The beaver or "amik" was chosen as mascot, because the beaver represents hard work. The beaver is also an animal native to Canada

4)1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow,Russia

Misha also known as Mishka   is the name of the Russian Bear Mascot

   

5) 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles,USA

Sam the Olympic Eagle was the Mascot

6)1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul,South Korea

Hodori was the Mascot

The stylized tiger was designed by Kim Hyun as an amicable Amur Tiger, portraying the friendly and hospitable traditions of the Korean people

7)1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona,Spain

Cobi was the official mascot

8)1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta,State of Georgia ,USA


Izzy was the official mascot

Izzy, the animated character with the ability to morph into different forms was a departure from the Olympic tradition in that it did not represent a nationally-significant animal or human figure

9) 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney,Australia

Olly, Syd and Millie were the official mascots


Olly (from Olympics) the kookaburra represents the Olympic spirit of generosity. 

Syd (from Sydney) the platypus, represents the environment as well as the activity and energy of Australia and their population. 

Millie (from Millennium) the echidna, knows everything about technology and numerical data. 


 10)2004 Summer Olympics in Athens,Greece


"Athena" and "Phevos" were the Mascots

The pair are one of the few examples of anthropomorphic mascots in the history of the Olympics. 

According to the official mascot webpage, “their creation was inspired by an ancient Greek doll and their names are linked to ancient Greece, yet the two siblings are children of modern times - Phevos and Athena represent the link between Greek history and the modern Olympic Games.

Vinicius was the official mascot
