QF 4 France Vs Iceland - Match Facts

Head-to-head
  • France are unbeaten in 11 previous matches with Iceland, winning eight of those games.
  • Iceland have lost all six of their matches away to France, scoring five goals and conceding 22.
  • The last two encounters have ended in 3-2 wins for the French.
  • The only meeting this century saw France come from two goals down to win 3-2 in a friendly in Valenciennes in May 2012. Birkir Bjarnason and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored for the visitors before Mathieu Debuchy, Franck Ribery and Adil Rami replied for France.
  • Iceland's only previous game against the French at the Stade de France was in a Euro 2000 qualifier in October 1999. Iceland recovered from 2-0 down but France won 3-2 thanks to a David Trezeguet strike. Eidur Gudjohnsen came off the bench for Iceland in that game.
France
  • This will be France's 80th game at the Stade de France (W49, D20, L10).
  • They have won four of their five games there at major tournaments. Their lone draw was 0-0 against Italy in a World Cup quarter-final in 1998. They won a subsequent penalty shoot-out.
  • This is the third successive tournament where France have reached the quarter-finals. They were beaten at this stage at Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup by Spain and Germany, respectively.
  • On the four previous occasions France were eliminated in the quarter-finals of a major tournament, the team who beat them went on to lift the trophy. That was Italy and Germany at the 1938 and 2014 World Cups, and Greece and Spain at Euro 2004 and 2012.
  • They are unbeaten in their last 16 games at major tournaments on home soil, winning 14 and drawing two.
  • France have conceded two goals from penalties at Euro 2016 but have not let in a goal from open play.
  • They have allowed their opponents a total of just three shots on target at Euro 2016 - fewer than any other side. Two of those were penalties scored by Romania and the Republic of Ireland
  • Antoine Griezmann has scored three of France's last four goals but has never scored for the French national team at the Stade de France (in 603 minutes of play).
Iceland
  • All six of Iceland's goals at Euro 2016 have been scored by different players.
  • All four of their matches in France have seen both sides score.
  • Iceland have only lost once in their last 10 competitive matches (W5, D4).
  • They are one of two teams, along with Wales, to have scored in all of their games at Euro 2016.

Olivier Giroud scored two goals and set up another as the Euro 2016 hosts France thrashed Iceland 5-2 on Sunday to set up a semi-final clash against world champions Germany.

Giroud fired France ahead after just 12 minutes at a rain-drenched Stade de France with Paul Pogba then heading in his first goal of the tournament to double the hosts' lead.

Dimitri Payet struck two minutes before half-time to put France in complete control and Antoine Griezmann raced clear to add a fourth to round out France's first-half blitz.

Iceland, who beat England 2-1 to reach the last eight, put on another never-say-die performance.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Birkir Bjarnason grabbed second-half consolation goals either side of Giroud's second but Iceland were overpowerd by France's domination.

France will take on Germany in Marseille on Thursday for a place in the final, while Iceland will return home as heroes after a remarkable run in their first appearance at a major tournament.
