33 years ago on June 25, India stunned West Indies to win 1983 World Cup

Exactly 33 years from today, June the 25th, India defeated the then invincible West Indies team of Clive Lloyd to win their maiden World Cup trophy, then called the Prudential Cup, that changed the way Indian cricket was looked at.

The West Indies had already won two World Cups (1975 and 1979) before that and were well on their way to completing a hat-trick chasing India's paltry 183

until the Kapil's Devil's turned it around with a stunning catch by the skipper to dismiss Viv Richards, followed by a clean-up job by Mohinder Amarnath.

India lost the toss and were sent in to bat at the jam-packed Lord's Cricket Ground.

The fearsome West Indian pace quartet of Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Michael Holding were ready to rip through the Indian batting line-up. Roberts claimed three wickets, while Marshall, Holding and Gomes grabbed two wickets apiece to dismantle the Indian innings and bowl them out for 183.

Kris Srikkanth was the only batsman able to put up any significant resistance with 38 off 57 balls. The right-handed opener hit seven boundaries and a six in his knock.

The chase seemed easy for West Indies but India had something different on their mind.

Minutes after the West Indies started their chase, opener Gordon Greenidge was seen walking back to the pavilion after being castled by medium pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu.

Madan Lal removed Desmond Haynes (13) and Richards (33), while Roger Binny dismissed captain Clive Lloyd (8). Kapil Dev ran almost 20 yards to take a spectacular catch of Richards, when it looked he will take West Indies to an easy win.

Mohinder Amarnath clipped the West Indies' wings by sending wicketkeeper Jeff Dujon (25), Malcolm Marshall (18) and Michael Holding (6) back in the hut.

The Indian victory not only shed the minnows' tag but also ended the dominance of the West Indies team, who have never reached a World Cup final since then.
