Paraguay (1986), Belgium & Cameroon (1990), Spain (1996) Denmark (2002) and Ecuador (2006) are the only countries England have beaten in a knockout game at a major tournament since winning the World Cup in 1966.
It's a remarkable statistic, and failure to add Iceland to that list will almost certainly end the tenure of manager Roy Hodgson.
Heavily criticised after making six changes for the match with Slovakia, he has faced the music this week and his press conferences have been fiery. Against Iceland, the heat is on.
Iceland are a well-drilled side and have been backed by an impressive army of supporters. They had approximately 10,000 fans at their last two matches, which is around 3% of their total population
Can a country with the population the size of Leicester's pull off the unthinkable? Reaching the quarters would be a feat akin to the Foxes' Premier League title triumph
Round of 16 Match 08 England Vs Iceland - Match Facts
Head-to-head
- This will be the third encounter between England and Iceland. So far, England are unbeaten, having drawn 1-1 in June 1982 in a World Cup warm-up match and then enjoyed a 6-1 victory in June 2004 before that year's European Championship.
- This is the first time England have reached the knockout stages in two consecutive European Championship tournaments.
- England are unbeaten in their last 10 games at a Euros (shoot-outs excluded). Their last defeat was against France in 2004.
- However, England's last four knockout matches in this tournament have all gone to penalties. They won the first shoot-out (v Spain in 1996) but have since then lost the last three (v Germany in 1996, v Portugal in 2004, v Italy in 2012).
- England have had 46 more shots than their opponents (Russia, Wales, Slovakia) over their first three games at Euro 2016 but have only scored one more goal.
- Their three goals at Euro 2016 have all been scored from the 56th minute onwards.
- If Wayne Rooney plays, it will be his 115th cap which would equal David Beckham's record for most games by an outfield player for England. He scored a brace against Iceland in his only previous game against them back in June 2004.
- Rooney scored four goals in his first three games at a major tournament with England, which were all at Euro 2004. However, since then, he has scored just two goals in 17 games.
- Iceland have only lost once in their last nine competitive matches (W4, D4).
- All three of Iceland's group games at Euro 2016 have seen both teams score.
- They were the only team, along with Spain, to start with the same line-up in all three of their group games.
- Striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson has only had two shots in 245 minutes at Euro 2016 - neither of them were on target.
- Hannes Thor Halldorsson has made more saves than any other goalkeeper at this tournament (18).
- Halldorsson has found Sigthorsson with 30 passes/long kicks, the most from a goalkeeper to a striker at Euro 2016.
Goal Scorers
For Iceland - Ragnar Sigurdsson(6th minute)and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson(18the minute)
For England - Wayne Rooney 4th minute penalty
Iceland pulled off the biggest shocks in European Championship history by beating England 2-1 in the round of 16 on Monday, continuing the astonishing run of the smallest nation at the tournament.
England slumped to its most embarrassing loss in a generation after taking the lead in the fourth minute through Wayne Rooney's penalty.
Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson took advantage of defensive shortcomings by England to put Iceland ahead by the 18th minute, and the Icelanders defended superbly in the second half to earn the biggest victory in their history.
The country of 330,000 — featuring in its first ever major tournament — next plays host nation France in Saint-Denis on Sunday, while England heads home early again for another post-tournament inquest.
Iceland now meets France, a match that promises to be a much harder test- France have never lost to Iceland in their previous eleven meetings with 8 wins and 3 draws scoring 30 goals in the process.
Ironically France qualified for the 2000 Euro cup after beating Iceland 3-2, and then went on to win the tournament.

England
fans went from ecstasy to agony in Nice after taking the lead against
Iceland - only to concede two goals in the next ten minutes against the
country with a population of just 332,000.
Roy Hodgson stepped down as manager of the side following the game, stating he was 'unable to deliver'
England soccer coach Roy Hodgson's four-year reign came to an abrupt
end after their shock 2-1 defeat by tiny Iceland at the Euro 2016 round
of 16 stage on Monday.
Hodgson, 68, wasted little time in
announcing he was stepping down at the end of his contract when he read a
prepared statement at the post-match news conference."We are out of the Euros so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players," said the man who replaced Italian Fabio Capello.
"My contract was always going to be up after this tournament. I would have loved to have stayed on another two years, but now it is time for someone else to take over this group of players," he added.
The coaching staff of Gary Neville and Ray Lewington, who sat with Hodgson at the news conference, are also leaving.

ENGLAND HUMBLED BY MINNOWS ICELAND: FOUR OF THE MOST SHOCKING UPSETS IN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL
Senegal 1-0 France at the 2002 World Cup
Senegal's
beat defending champions France in the first round, after the French
had also won Euro 2000. Despite the efforts of players such as Thierry
Henry and others, France, who were overwhelming favorites to beat the
Africans, lost to Senegal, who were making their first World Cup
appearance.
USA 1-0 England at the 1950 World Cup
When
the Americans sent an amateur team to Brazil for the tournament, they
surely were not expecting to compete with the likes of England, let
alone win a game.
But
that is excatly what they did, made all the more incredible by the fact
that England were considered the best team in the world at the time.
Brazil 1-2 Uruguay at the 1950 World Cup
Called
the 'El Maracanazo', this match is considered the biggest upset in the
history of the World Cup. Brazil had already beaten Sweden and Spain 7-1
and 6-1 in the final group stage, and only a draw against Uruguay to
be crowned world champions.
Nearly
200,000 spectators, the most ever for a World Cup match, crammed into
Rio de Janeiro's Maracaná stadium to watch Brazil win the top prize in
international football, only for the plucky Uruguayans to shock the
world by winning the game 2-1.
Cameroon 1-0 Argentina at the 1990 World Cup
Called
'The Miracle of Milan', a Diego Maradona-inspired Argentina went into
the competition as defending champions. The game followed a pattern of
the Cameroonians deliberately fouling Maradona to limit his effect on
the match, stealing a goal despite going down to ten men.
Cameroon
would go on to reach the quarter finals of the competition, but it was
the match with Argentina that would be considered for a long time as
Africa's greatest individual achievement.
