2016 West Bengal Assembly Elections Phase 06 - At 103 years, Bengal’s Asghar Ali may be India’s oldest first-time voter Thursday May 05,2016


Doddering and frail but nevertheless beaming with pride, 103-year-old former enclave dweller Mohammed Ajgar Ali cast his maiden vote in the sixth and final phase of the West Bengal elections on Thursday May 05,2016

Accompanied by his son, grandson and other family members, Ali was brought in a special vehicle provided by the Election Commission which literally rolled out the red carpet for these voters.

Mohammed AjgarAli, a resident Maddhya Mashaldanga Chhitmahal became a citizen of India after a land boundary agreement was signed between India and Bangladesh

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has highlighted the implementation of the Land Boundary Agreement under which Bangladesh and India exchanged 162 enclaves.

A total 14,864 residents of 51 Bangladeshi enclaves became Indian citizens.

On Thursday 9,776 residents of erstwhile enclaves voted for the first time in Cooch Behar.
