A total of 110 women candidates contested in the fray. Of these, UDF
fielded only eight candidates and interestingly all them belonged to
Congress.
Neither the Kerala Congress (M) nor IUML fielded a single woman candidate
LDF took some advantage by fielding 17 candidates, but it was way behind the 30 % mark. CPM fielded 12, CPI 4 and JD(s) 1 women candidates.
Last five year saw women taking lead in all major struggles in the state - be it the historical Munnar struggle by Pengal Orumai, strike demanding better wage and rest hour by textile salesgirls, Nilpu Samaram demanding social justice for scheduled tribe led by C K Janu etc.
However, then it comes to elections, women's representation to Assembly is a meagre 5.7 %.
The 140 member Assembly has only eight women representatives, one seat higher than last year's figure.
The state which is hailed for high literacy among women, 8 women MLAs cut a sorry figure.
