Manchester United will attempt to salvage something from their tumultuous season -- and potentially keep manager Louis van Gaal in a job -- in Saturday's FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Both teams have endured a poor campaign in the Premier League, with the Red Devils finishing fifth and Palace finishing 10 places behind them in 15^th spot.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three years, the Wembley showpiece represents United's last chance to make good on a campaign of stagnant football and simmering fan dissent

Manchester  United have not won the FA Cup since 2004, when they beat Millwall 3-0 in Cardiff, victory on Saturday would see them equal Arsenal's tally of 12 successes in the competition -- a record they once held outright.

Anthony Martial's late goal against Everton saw them seal a berth in the final and United now share a joint record of 19 final appearances along with Arsenal. The Gunners have won the competition for a record 12 times and a victory over Palace could see them level the north London record.

Jesse Lingard's extra-time thunderbolt earned Manchester United a record-equalling 12th FA Cup as Louis van Gaal's side came from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 in Saturday's final at Wembley.

In a rematch of the 1990 final, which United won after a replay, underdogs Palace took the lead in the 78th minute when Jason Puncheon slammed home, only for Juan Mata to equalise less than three minutes later.

With the tie heading towards penalties, substitute Lingard drilled a stunning volley past a motionless Wayne Hennessey in the 110th minute to end United's 12-year wait to lift the FA Cup and give their supporters something to cheer about at the end of a tumultuous season.
