The Congress and the DMK have reached a seat sharing agreement for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and accordingly Congress gets 41 seats as against the 63 seats it contested under the same alliance in 2011 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
DMK and Congress revived their alliance after a 3-year break-up to face the coming assembly elections as it is to be noted that both the parties were not in alliance in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections
After joining hands for 2004 Lok Sabha polls, DMK had walked out of the Congress-led UPA in 2013 over the vexed Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
However,DMK and Congress revived the alliance on February 13, 2016with Gulam Nabi Azad, incharge of Congress affairs in Tamil Nadu, holding the first round of seat-sharing talks with Karunanidhi on March 25,2016
