The ICC, after its first meeting in Dubai on January 28, 2015, awarded India the rights to host the World Twenty20 championship in 2016. Sri Lanka are the defending champions.

Previous Winners

ICC introduced the championship in 2007. India became the first champion followed by Pakistan (2009), England (2010), West Indies (2012) and Sri Lanka (2014)

Eight teams, including two Test nations, are set to sweat from March 8 to 13,2016 for two Super-10 spots in the sixth T20 World Cup

Top eight teams in the ICC T20I Rankings as of the cut-off date April 30, 2014, get direct entry to the Super-10 stage

Two teams from the Qualifiers – winners of Group A and winners of Group B

  • Group A: Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Oman
  • Group B: Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Scotland, Zimbabwe

Since Bangladesh (10th) and Zimbabwe (13th) did not feature in that bracket at that stage, they are required to go through the qualifying stage.

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe entered as Full ICC Members, while the other six (Associate Nations) were selected from the 14-team ICC Qualifiers held in 2015, which saw Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Oman making it to the qualifiers for the 2016 WT20.
